The only reason any of you have fear of sharks is because of the media. Shark week will discuss the tragic killing of millions of sharks and the public's inaccurate depiction of sharks and then turn around and show attack survivors and discuss how sharks are the perfect predator etc. it's one or the other. people watch those shows for the same reason they watch car racing, for the danger and disaster.
And fear is a big reason for the killing of many sharks. If the fear weren't there then it might be different. We don't kill dolphins. Why? We aren't afraid of them yet they are very dangerous which unknown to people.
And someone asked how I know so much about sharks...have YOU ever spent an entire day at the top shark research facility in the world? I have. I spent an entire day at the BBFS (Bimini Biological Field Station) as well as the UNEXSO center on Grand Bahama Have you ever shared a flight and then sat and had coffee with one of the most famous shark researchers in the world? Her name is Cristina Zenato she is the person who discovered tonic immobility watch this video and it will blow your mind! the sharks literally put their heads in her lap to be touched like dogs.
so when you ask why I think I know so much, it's because I have actually spent time at one of the top facilities for shark research and preservation in the world. Have you?
this is what she discovered you can do using nothing more than the power of touch.

I would be very interested in hearing of your experiences with sharks. I have never been in the water with them but have jumped the occasional one. Well it was actually a cat fish , pretending to be something else.

Ive been diving for 10 years and have seen a lot of sharks. The ones that scare me the most are the bull sharks just because they are so huge. they have enormous bellies and their heads are so wide and they just look fierce. We were diving and my friends were spear fishing when we turned and there was an 8 foot bull shark flanking us as we started to the surface. he circles us until we had to give up the 4 grouper that we had. he took the fish and went n his way but my heart was beating out of my chest. Ive seen many reef sharks some over 7 feet long once in the bahamas we were snorkeling a shallow plane wreck and when we came around one end of it there was a really big lemon shark. he kept his distance but he didnt back down at all. we were half mile to the boat so we just hung around and he eventually got bored and left.
but my first experience with a shark was the scariest one. I was in Fiji and we went on a dive in 60 feet of water and all was going well. we ran into a school of man-o-war that were enormous so we had to go under them. when we got down to the reef my ears were going crazy and I wasn't paying attention when my partner yanked my fin and pointed up. above us were about 20 HUGE hammerheads just circling. we were deep couldnt see the boat and my ears wouldn't clear. I thought I was going to die! our guide literally ascended straight up through them like nothing. eventually they moved on but it took what seemed like forever.
I saw a shark today crusing the sandflats right under my boat. it was a black tip reef shark about 5 feet long they could care less about us unless we have fresh fish on us or we're making ourselves look like something they usually eat.
I recommend highly going to Bimini. not only is it an amazing place but if you go let me know and I'll hook you up with Jacob at the shark lab there and you can spend a day learning about them. they take you out into the bay to where they keep young sharks that they tag and release and you get to see enormous sharks like tiger sharks and bull sharks through the glass bottom boat. awesome experience.

There is no denying that certain shark species can be dangerous (Bull, Tiger and Great White), but most attacks are due to mistaken identity. That is not really much comfort to the victim, however.

CM, I think. Their teeth were typically about 7" long long the edge (the way it's measured in that picture). The teeth on the right are from a Great White. Based on fossils, scientists estimate that they could grow to be 60 feet long and looked like a gigantic Great White.

I started watching Shark Week back when it first debuted (late 80's?). I was never into watersports or diving. My interest in aquatic life pretty much stopped at my fish tank. But watching Shark Week has become something of a tradition with me. They throw in some melodrama to get people to watch, but you can learn a lot too. And when I lived in the area, I even drove over to the Discovery HQ building in Silver Spring, MD to see this - pretty damn cool, IMO:

here are some pics from a trip to Bimini
a view from 30 feet down up to the surface of a dive with wild spotted dolphins right near the SS Sapona there were about 30 of them and they were very frisky and playful and would bump you if you weren't looking. one of the greatest experiences of my life. they were absolutely wild and not being fed a thing. they were just inter-acting with us for fun. very awesome
nice big reef shark who was curious and stayed within 30 feet of us for our entire dive. the guide said that it had probably been fed before at one of the shark feeding dives so it was hanging around.
a plane sunk for a movie that was so cool there was a huge moray eel inside
