Brasillian legendary striker Ronaldo announced his retirement from Soccer in a press conference in Sao Paulo.

He won the World Cup twice (despite he never played, he was selected among the Brasilian team that won WC94 in the US. He also won WC2002 in Japan and Korea), scored twice during the final of the World Cup '02 (Brasil won the final 2-0 against Germany).
He established a new record with 15 goals scored during World Cups (beating german striker Gerd Muller).

He was elected Golden Boal twice (1997, 2002) and FIFA World's Best Player 3 times (1996, 1997, 2002).

During his carreer, he played for Cruzeiro (Brasil), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), FC Bacelona (Spain) Inter Milan (Italy), Real Madrid (Spain) and AC Milan (Italy).

Having troubles with recurring injuries he had got back to Brasil in 2009. He was playing for Corinthians Sao Paulo.

He is truly a magnificent footballer.

Played for two of my favourite teams, Barca and Inter, then played for two of my least favourite teams, Real Madrid and Milan. Never the same after that knee injury at Inter and maybe got distracted with all the money and fame, hell he tried a lot harder than that loser Adriano who never repayed any of the faith shown in him by Inter. I remember Ronaldo on the old ISS Pro games, you'd just press accelerate (R2?) and he'd outpace everyone on the pitch and rounding the keeper was easy with him.

Here was the reaction in the United States:

It's a shame he was a great player, that world final against France ruined him, he was never the same after that. But still a great player.
