Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters

I realize that it's Rolling Stone but I have two big issues. First, how is Taylor Swift even on this list? The second is how is Kris Kristofferson way down at 87? He completely changed the rules about what you could say in a country song. He should have been at least top 25.

Taylor Swift? I've only heard her country songs but even those are teenage dribble.

Rolling Stone needs to stick to retracting rape stories.

Never mind Taylor Swift- Kanye West???? Not that I ever put any stock in what Rolling Stone magazine says. How on earth you have Joni Mitchell ranked higher than Johnny Cash as a songwriter, I'm not sure. And how piles of shit like Eminem and Kanye are on this list, but a guy like... just picking a random name, John Denver, who wrote, actually WROTE tons of songs, many of which were hits is not there? I mean, this list basically plays like a who's who of "Artists Rolling Stone would like to suck off"- plenty of amazing, talented songwriters on here, but also a lot of shit. I mean, as someone stated above....

No Freddie Mercury?

Taylor Swift writes the same song over and over and she's even on the countdown?

Yes Rolling Stone, continue to sink your credibility into the ground.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I was hopeful - why? I don't know - but I immediately lost that hope when the third artist named was TAYLOR SWIFT. Top 100 greatest songwriters? Of ALL-TIME? No. Just no. That made me want to stop reading. But, I didn't. I kept on going.

Tom Petty is directly behind George Clinton? I agree that George Clinton should be on the list (or at least get some sort of 'honorable mention'), but to put him so 'high' on that list AND to put Tom Petty LOWER on the list is just stupid. But, I kept on going.

Billy Joel is only #50 on the list. Not in the top ten? This list can eat an unwashed dick. But, I kept on going.

Robert Johnson is #23 on the list? I'm surprised he even made the list. He is definitely deserving of it, but I didn't expect Rolling Stone to put him on their list (let alone, know who the fuck he is). First thing I've seen on this list that made me smile. But, then I kept on going.

You put 2 of the Beatles in the top 3? How predictable. And, 3 of the 4 Beatles made the list? Imagine that. All they do is suckle the teat of the Beatles. They suckle their teatles (ha, I'm funny).

I didn't follow George Harrison's career, but somehow I just don't think he should be on this list.
About the first thing that comes to mind is that he got caught plagiarizing with that song ... My Sweet Lord, was it?

What do you think?

Not much. My list would look quite different. Someday I shall take the time and effort to bless you all with my opinions. Until then, any list of the top 100 of any songwriter list that has Taylor Swift on it is automatically classified as pure bullshit in my book. What a joke.

How wrong can someone be? George Harrison might be the most underrated songwriter of all time. As My Guitar Gently Weeps? Are you kidding? The lawsuit over My Sweet Lord was nothing but a money grab. He didn't plagiarize anything regardless of the judgement. I take it you either don't care for the Beatles much or simply don't know much about them. Maybe both.

OK I admit I have become a Swifty over the past couple of years. *ducks*

Never Grow Up reminds of a time when my father started having heart issues, I was rather young at the time. The song reminds of that point in my life when I realized my parents were aging, I was aging, and everything I knew was changing. Something we all go through, but I had never heard that experience illustrated so well in song before.

Ronan written with permission from the diary of Ronan's mother, he was a young boy diagnosed with terminal cancer. Swift was able to condense all of this woman's emotions of joy, wonder, sorrow, and anger from a large daily on-line diary into a three minute song, and still convey all of the impact of this young boys life. Her choice of words, music, instrumentation, even her vocal tone makes this one of the most moving songs I have ever heard. Easily equal to Clapton's "Tears in Heaven".

Granted a lot of her music is about teenage feelings, or pop, but I truly look forward to what she can produce as she gets older, and experiences more of life. She has demonstrated that she has tremendous potential, as those two above are very powerful songs to me. Plus she has quite a few others if you listen to her albums instead of what gets airplay.

You may commence pelting me with tomatoes now. *ducking & running*

Well, YOU should talk about "how wrong can someone be." You happen to be wrong. I AM a "Beatles" Fan. I don't claim to be an expert on EVERYTHING Beatles and haven't heard every friggin' song they ever played, but yes, I do like The Beatles.

As I said, I didn't follow George Harrison's career post Beatles. But, my opinion is my opinion and it stands. And as for the lawsuit over the My Sweet Lord plagiarizing? THAT I do agree with the allegation. You can call it a "money grab," but I definitely heard the original song and I 100% concur that yes, definitely the tune, the melody WAS copied. There wasn't even any grey area. It wasn't even remotely difficult to catch the extreme similarity. It was crystal clear.

Just because one is a Beatles Fan, one doesn't have to be a Fan of their individual work post Beatles.

A 3-year-old Valley boy who died of cancer in 2011 has inspired the writing of "Ronan," a Taylor Swift song that will debut on Friday, Sept. 7, during a telethon to raise funds to battle the disease.

Swift wrote the song after reading a blog written by the boy's mother, Maya Thompson. According to the Associated Press, Thompson is credited as a co-writer.

The song has never been performed in public, the AP says. After the telethon, it will be available on iTunes, with proceeds going to cancer-related charities.

I have many issues with the list. For one, if you're going to have Burt Bacharach on the list, you've got to include many, many popular songwriters who write outside of the realms of country, rock, and rhythm and blues. I'm talking Rodgers and Hammerstein. Cole Porter. And while you're at it, Glenn Miller or George M. Cohen. Secondly, represent blues a lot more. After all, that's where most of rock, R&B, Rap, Soul, etc. came from. If you give blues its total due, you've gotta hit Ledbetter, B.B., Hooker, Skip James...on and on. And what about jazz?? Okay. Maybe Taylor and some of her young friends have future greatness...but they are far from there now. And not for this list. Prog rock is practically non-existent. Country...did I miss Patsy Cline? George Jones? Waylon Jennings? How about a girl we lost recently: Leslie Gore.
I guess the risk they take in compiling a list like this, is the backlash they'll get...like we have here.
Or...maybe that's the point.

I'm NOT a Beatles fan, and even I can say that George Harrison is the best musician of the bunch, the second-best songwriter.....and the one who's truly underrated.

Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

It is.

The Blues is the roots, the rest is the fruits.

(P.S. You all thought I was gonna bitch about Jagger/Richards not being higher, right?:D )

A lot of head scratchers on that list.

I'm in the camp that didn't think all that much of George Harrison's songwriting.
Where is Sting? I thought for sure he'd be somewhere in the top 100.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
After reading only a couple of the posts, I'm not going to even read the fucking list.....I know it'll infuriate me.

When i saw Max Martin ahead of Tom Waits i laughed so hard i almost fell off my chair. Yeah, this whole thing is one big retarded failure. Oh , and Nick Cave is a better songwriter than 90% of the people on that list.

Well, controversy sells ... gets attention. So I'm sure they're enjoying having people fight over their choices. :1orglaugh Cuz it puts them (Rolling Stone Mag) in the spotlight, in the thick of things. It gets people over to their website.

Is there even still an actual Rolling Stone magazine?

If you read my quote, Chuck, I said " I take it you either don't care for the Beatles much or simply don't know much about them.". You pretty much admitted to the latter option so I don't see how that makes me "wrong" but, hey, if I touched a nerve, sorry. You'll get over it. You have a right to your opinion even it it's incorrect from my perspective.

I'm NOT a Beatles fan, and even I can say that George Harrison is the best musician of the bunch, the second-best songwriter.....and the one who's truly underrated.

And this from the quintessential Stones fan. I'd say that's irrefutable evidence right there!
