My choice is Al Pacino.
His character portrayals have been consistantly "different" from one another. From Godfather 1 & 2, And Justice For all, Serpico, Scarface, Scent Of A Woman, Heat (which I think he stole the show from De Niro) right up to The Insider, Pacino has consistantly become the "character" in the film. Whereas I find De Niro repeats the same De Niro formula over and over.
When I watch Taxi Driver and Raging Bull I see two of the most amazing performances on camera... yet in virtually every film thereafter I see the same performances.... With The Exception of Cape Fear, I always feel I'm watching the same combination of Jake Lomatta and Travis Bickle.
The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, Sleepers, Cop Land, etc... I never see anything new with De Niro.
Both are great actors though... and when it comes to comedy, DeNiro definately has the edge.
