Here's a question for you. When we go to the new version of the board, should we reset repuation to 0?

Don't worry. As of this moment, there are absolutely ZERO plans to reset it so don't freak out.

The reason I'm asking this question is because I've been working with the programmer who maintains the board to get the new version set up. Right now reputation means nothing, except for some myFreeOnes points in the beginning, and has become over inflated. If certain members who have a really high rep give a new member rep, then they could possibly have the same amount of rep of someone who has been around awhile.

So my question to you is...should we leave it the way it is? Just a fun little game that means absolutely nothing?

Or should we reset it to 0 and add checks, balances, and privilages that come with having a high reputation?

Again...just because I'm asking these questions DOES NOT mean we're actually going to reset it.

I already think rep is silly, so frankly, your opinion can't get any more silly than that. ;-) I'm also open to suggestions for alternatives to reputation that you might have seen elsewhere!

Well, it truely wouldn't truely be reset to 0. It probably would start between 1-5.

But for some, that's as good as wiping it to 0.

the girls on the board get all the damn rep anyway! the only thing i would like is for it to say something else besides that we're all "lost in cyberspace."

noobs with red rep makes me giggle every time so you gotta keep that.

the checks and balances and privileges is pretty cool though. id like to see that.


reps a weird system. but its mystery is half the fun. of course its a system of give rep get rep.

im stingy with dishing it out as i am with accepting friends (so if you got one from me, feel special, im no whore!) so i tend not to get rep as much as the happy-go-repper.

a new system, i suppose, would make things a little more lively.

I think all the people who are don't like the thought of getting their rep reset are too afraid to admit it because they know it's kinda silly. Hell, even I can't help but feel a little arrogant with the amount of rep I have. I do think it's overinflated though....

Is there any way to automatically knock some zero's off everyones rep, then put in some checks and balances/privileges? I know Greg's gonna have the biggest meltdown if the rep has to be reset to 0.

There actually is. Basically, if I make some adjustments in the backend, it will lower the number associated with rep. Nobody will lose their comments people have given them since the amount of times they've been repped won't change...the value of the rep itself changes.

We tried that back in 2008 and rep was halved. I still have PTSS from that incident.

I wouldn't mind dividing down everyone's rep proportionately. I just think it's entertaining because lately I've had a competition going on with Ulysses because we've pretty much been near neck and neck when it comes to rep. Whoever gets to a rounded number first wins the pot, which is....nothing.

Maybe you can get them to put an infinity sign next to your rep power, even if you can't use it, just to show everybody who's boss.

At the time, Dirk (no offense, you just happen to have the most rep) had been a member for 2 years and hadn't achieved 1 million rep. Less than 1 year later, he has 10 million rep. The numbers are getting ridiculous. He's repping at 100,000 right now. The top 50 or so users are all beyond 1 million rep. A noob with 100 posts to his name will have 1 million rep by the time he hits 200 posts. That's outrageous.

Although, assuming it's reset and you attach actual worth to the rep, in 2 years time we'll be back where we are now. Unreal numbers that are actually worth something. Depending on what the rep is worth, this could be bad.

But honestly, just divide everyone's rep by 10 or 100, then make rep power 1/500 instead of 1/100. I'm a genius, no?

As for privileges, I think we should consider something like avatar size or perhaps even a custom smiley. Why is there no pirate smiley anyways?
