Report: Tribe wants apology for use of the word "Geronimo" during raid

AFK..being taken to the vet to get neutered.
The issue is a little more subtle than that .. by code naming Bin Laden Geronimo, they have equated a global mass murder with an iconic figure Native American figure; a man who, along with his people, were hunted, killed forced from their land and .. well, terrorized, by white settlers and the US government for centuries.

It was an incredibly stupid decision to use that name, but a decision that once again graphically demonstrates a disturbing inability by the US Government and its military to see beyond the tip of its own nose..

:dito: Of all the names to pick they choose an inspirational figure of a minority ethnic group/people. Some of the younger and less smarter Americans (which there seem to be a lot of) will now associate Geronimo with anti-American terrorism whereas he is seen as a brave fearless freedom fighter to the native Indians. Reading this you can understand their concern, from Reuters

"To equate Geronimo or any other Native American figure with Osama bin Laden, a mass murderer and cowardly terrorist, is painful and offensive to our Tribe and to all native Americans," wrote Jeff Houser, chairman of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, in a letter to President Barack Obama.

Houser said that while he was certain the naming of the operation was based on "misunderstood and misconceived historical perspectives of Geronimo and his armed struggle," he demanded a formal apology from Obama.

"What this action has done is forever link the name and memory of Geronimo to one of the most despicable enemies this country has ever had," he wrote.

"Unlike the coward Osama bin Laden, Geronimo faced his enemy in numerous battles and engagements," Houser said.

The Onondaga Nation Council of Chiefs in New York state said that using Geronimo as the code name for the bin Laden mission was "reprehensible."

"To compare him to Osama bin Laden is illogical and insulting," the Council of Chiefs said in a statement.

"The name Geronimo is arguably the most recognized Native American name in the world, and this comparison only serves to perpetuate negative stereotypes about our peoples. The U.S. military leadership should have known better," they said.

The U.S. Senate committee needs to look at the prevalence in American society of "these inappropriate uses of Native American icons and cultures," said Tuell.

"The impacts to Native and non-Native children are devastating," she said.

Ideally such code names should be chosen entirely at random.

For example, codenaming a new aircraft penetrator/needle could result in tipping off enemy espionage thta the aircraft is a penetrator aircraft.

Conspiracy...
I agree. I want an apology from the racist Obama as well. :hammer:

US military equating a hero to a CIA created asset, like Osama.

And, Imus was a "racist" for saying nappy-headed hoes.

Where are Sharpton, Jackson, the ADL, and SPLC on this one?

Geronimo was protecting his homeland from a foreign invasion.

I don't see anyone saying "F" you to the black panthers or the NAACP plant Rosa Parks or anyone else for that matter. :nono:

Yet they are fine with Washington DC football team called the redskins....what the fuck?

No, they aren't fine with that, not one bit. Neither are they okay with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Black Hawks, Atlanta Braves, or the Kansas City Chiefs. It's just that they never got above a mild whimper when it came to voicing their opinion about it as evidenced by you not ever hearing about it.

Actually they are not. There have been protests & lawsuits for the name & trademark to be changed starting in the mid eighties. I can't remember the reasons as far as court rulings on why it wasn't changed. But I can tell you that the Cookes (former owners) & Synder(current) aren't considering a change.
