heh...nobody likes jokes about the education system...which is in shambles in detroit...and many other parts of the country...turns out when teachers don't have books or supplies, parents don't give their children the slightest assistance (either cuz they don't care or they've got no time to do anything but work a few shitty jobs), parents expecting teachers to both educate and raise their children, government slashing of educational funding, the joke that is no child left behind (a set of rules crafted by politicians not the logical choice of people, those who deal with students on a daily basis...aka teachers), and fuck...more issues than i care to list well when all that's going on 1/2 the students not being able to read isn't much of a surprise
I think I figured it out...the poll only consisted of 2 people. 47% +/-3% The truth though is that the schools system is so bad and not because of the money they are spending...about 700 million a year for 70-80,000 students. So much of that money goes to line the pockets of flat out criminals that are stealing the city blind. Corruption has been around so long and is so well embedded that its almost impossible to stop it at this point. Plus add in all the retired teachers that are collecting huge money in pensions and benefits and you have a disaster. Personally I dont think it can be fixed so they will just have to deal with it.

DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.
“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.
“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.

I am not gonna lie and say Detroit is the best city in the world, yeah its got its problems, just like Chicago it seems like the last couple of Detroit's MAYORS and Detroit's city council are all Ass backward pecker woods who don't know how the hell to run a city, or how to run its police / fire services which have major flaws in the way they are run, the school system in Detroit is just like the rest of the city, run very poorly without any stability or structure, everybody has there hands in the cookie jar when it comes to funds for all of the above listed parts of city management, sort of speak..
Regardless of all that BS, I don't give a flying fuck where they get the figure that 47% of Detroit is illiterate from, but its absolutely FABRICATED and simply exaggerated, there is no way 47% of Detroiters can't read, that's complete BULLSHIT..
there is no way to support those claims, how can anybody access this accurately??? How can they prove that

Line up every resident in Detroit that is age 6 and over??? this is one of the most ludicrous, ridiculous things I've ever read that somebody actually has the gall to print without proving its credibility??? where's the proof? with no documented proof to support that fabricated non-sense. I wouldn't doubt that the number of illiterate people is a lot higher than normal compared to most of the country though. A lot of that has to do with not only with how bad things are there and have been for some time, but do to the fact that so many people, that probably had more means which means they were probably better educated, have moved out of Detroit and the entire state for that matter which leaves people with no other choice but to be there because they don't have the reasonable resources to go anywhere else.
