There's been a huge fight here in NJ about them. A yellow light should stay lit 1 second for every 10 mph. Towns installed these things without calibrating properly. The state also wants these towns to do studies on how fast cars pass through the intersections. They need to find the 85% average speed too. The whole article is below.

Kind of the same problem down here in Texas. They installed this crap all across the state then the state courts ruled them to be illegal which started a whole new round of crazy when they said that while they were illegal the cities using them could continue to do so until the contract on them ran out. :suicide:

knows petras secret: she farted.
the surveillance is creepy. they took them off the highways out here but still remain on red lights.

I've been waiting for someone with money and time to take this crap to court and fight it.

The example used in the OP's link leads me to believe that most municipalities will simply dismiss any ticket where there appears to be a real fight based on constitutional grounds. Everyone knows these things won't stand up to 5th and 6th amendment arguments. They're counting on people just paying them, so when someone wants to fight, they'll quietly dismiss them.

If anyone thinks they are about safety, I have some land to sell you, just 20 miles west of Miami.

As the article stated, it's a $3 million cash cow in Newark. In 8 months in Woodbridge Township, 10,000 tickets for $1.24 million. Half goes to the town and the state and county cut up the rest. Many towns did see a decrease in intersection collisions but they were offset by a rise in rear end collisions. It's a racket. The towns give a cut to the camera company.

In rural NY they installed one of these at an intersection that I am very familiar with. It used to be a stop signs to cross a county road. Never an accident area. Never a need to stop traffic on this county road for a turn off or to cross it. There it is now. A red light that does nothing but to stop me and the cross traffic from passing through by our judgment.
