PSP or DS?

I own a PSP and a DS. I got both hand helds the day they were released. Lately I've been playing with my DS more since the PSP hasn't released anything new in the past months.

I'm currently playing a few games on my DS - Pokemon Platinum, DQV, Rhythm Heaven, Animal Crossing and Super Robot Taisen OG SAGA.

Lately PSP hasn't released any great games. The last games I played were God of War, Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, Loco Roco 2. It feels like Sony has given up on the PSP. I heard Sony plans on releasing a new PSP sometime next year.

So which hand held do you like better? What games are you currently playing?

The psp is a very underrated handheld system, it's basically a ps2 in your hands on the go (I would say ps3 but the graphics haven't reached that point yet), it has fun great quality game some even better the most systems' games. It's the complete package when it comes down to it it's a gaming system, mp3 player, movie player, web browser, phone, gps, & it's capable to use the psn, keeping you in touchwith your online friends where ever you go. All for $169.99 if you ask me that's a steal, the ds shouldn't even be in the same league, but people keep buying the ds two reasons. 1. most handheld gaming users are kids usually younger then 16 so the reason they want a ds is because it's made with kids in mind, while the psp tries to reach out more towards adults and some teens, so since kids usually primary handheld gaming users and parents want something that's intended for kids and for a cheap price the ds wins most family votes. 2 advertisements nintendo is king when it comes to advertisements they get kids' attentions every commercial break so since kids see celebrities like beyonce having fun on a ds kids automatically think its a great system and since sony doesn't have a clue with what they're doing when it comes to advertisements they lose out on a lot of patental buyers, hell they've even offended a lot of patental buyers with some of their ads. So if it wasn't for those 2 reasons I truly think the psp would dominate sales compared to the ds.

I'll have to disagree with you there Atom.

The DS is more popular than the PSP for all the right reasons. The games are the kind of games that you can pick up and play - which is what most people want from a hand held console. The PSP tries to cram home console gaming onto it - including the load times, which just don't feel right on a hand held.

Theres also the history - Nintendo have a great tradition of dominating the handheld market, so alot of people will naturally side with the experience Nintendo bring with that.

And theres always the fact the the Pokemon games are only available for DS. Still love those games...even at the ripe old age of 20. :1orglaugh

Underrated? There are only 2 great hand helds on the market: PSP and DS. How is it underrated? The only reason the PSP could be underrated is that SONY hasn't released many major hit games in 200/2009.

Phone you need to DL and buy parts. Same with GPS.

Shouldn't be in the same league? The second I read that I basically knew whatever you were going to say is all from your head and not backed up with info/proof.

1. most handheld gaming users are kids usually younger then 16 so the reason they want a ds is because it's made with kids in mind, while the psp tries to reach out more towards adults and some teens, so since kids usually primary handheld gaming users and parents want something that's intended for kids and for a cheap price the ds wins most family votes.

How do you know "most" hand held gamers are kids? And where did you get the age 16 from? DS reaches out to everyone in the family - both parents and children. Every time I'm on the subway I always see a few adults playing with a DS or PSP. The DS is not a childs hand held system.

The last time I seen a PSP commercial was when Final Fantasy: Crisis Core came out. Sony rarely launches any PSP commercial in USA. The only PSP adv I can think of that was ever offense was when they launched the Black and White PSP adv in Europe and it was a little racist.

Also - Beyonce is ok. She beautiful and a good singer... but I'm tired of her seeing her in every damn commercial. Last year I think she did nearly 10+ commercials - hair, credit cards, pink panther, soda, random crap for her to make money. When I saw her playing with a DS and laughing I thought it was the worst commercial I seen. If your buying a game/system because shes playing it then you need to go outside.

So if it wasn't for those 2 reasons I truly think the psp would dominate sales compared to the ds.

PSP does well in Europe and Japan. The only 2 reason PSP isn't doing well is:

1: They rarely do adv and commercials for any game.
2: They never have any NEW HIT games. If you have to wait 4-8 months for a fun new game... thats bad news.

Also - I know Sony is working on a new PSP so they could be cutting adv so they cause the money for when the new PSP is launched.

The psp is under-rated because

Phone you need to DL and buy parts. Same with GPS.

The point that I was trying to make with that statment was that you have the option to use it, you know a 360 & a ps3 can play hd games but you need to get hd cords to do so but you still have the option to use hd, do you get what I mean.

Shouldn't be in the same league? The second I read that I basically knew whatever you were going to say is all from your head and not backed up with info/proof.

First of all this entire thread you made is going to be a opinionated thread, so for you to think people won't give opinions & only facts then that's really idiotic of you, and yes that statment I made was an opinion.

How do you know "most" hand held gamers are kids? And where did you get the age 16 from? DS reaches out to everyone in the family - both parents and children. Every time I'm on the subway I always see a few adults playing with a DS or PSP. The DS is not a childs hand held system.

See that's exactly my point the ds is reaching out towards families/kids while the psp reach out towards hardcore gamers, look at the wii its a gaming system that families buy because it shows families having fun and its made for those people who just want to jump in and just have fun for a bit just like the ds, while the 360 & ps3 are intended more so towards hardcore gamers like the psp. In my opinion the ds is most definately a kids device. The reason I said 16 was because at that age most kids aren't considered hardcore gamers at that time so since I've said its intended for kids and not completely for hardcore gamers I think 16 would be a fair age I could have gone down if I wanted. And yes most handheld gamers are kids you've helped my case with that because you said you see a few adults with one bit if you go to all the kids on your block or apartments (where ever you live) and ask them if they have a handheld system more then a third of them well say yes, kids get them because they have all the time in the world to do what they want while most (emphasise on 'most' before you start acting like I said all please figure out the difference between the two words)adults don't see a reason to play video games because they don't have the time to or they would rather save the money and get a real system like a wii, 360, or ps3 or they would rather buy something that won't take up their need to use their hands like an ipod so that's my theory for saying most (MOST) handheld gamers are kids.

The last time I seen a PSP commercial was when Final Fantasy: Crisis Core came out. Sony rarely launches any PSP commercial in USA. The only PSP adv I can think of that was ever offense was when they launched the Black and White PSP adv in Europe and it was a little racist.

I think they don't put many commercials out is because they've messed up so many times with their commercials that they basicly said fuck it. And a little racism can go a long way espiecally since my claim is that most handheld gamers are kids parents don't want them associating with something that has shown a little racism and vandalism (they hired a graffiti artist to tag some parts of london with a few characters with psp in their hands) and causal people have found their attempets pathetic like the one where they made a website I think it was call iwantapsp.com where it looks like someone made a website to make it known he wants one and show all its qualities it wasn't long for people to find out it was actually sony who put the website up and that guy was just a paid actor.

Going outside won't do anything if they brought the system sinces its portable lol jk jk

PSP does well in Europe and Japan. The only 2 reason PSP isn't doing well is:

Well there's a rumor going around that they well be unvaling the new psp and that it won't use umds' anymore so maybe that's why there hasn't been many games for it lately & what the hell you're getting on my ass because I gave a statment that I made up (an opinon) yet you're doing it yourself look don't be a hypocritc I don't care if you're doing it know because I've down it you should stick by your rules if you're going to get on someone's ass for not doing it the way you want it
Also - I know Sony is working on a new PSP so they could be cutting adv so they cause the money for when the new PSP is launched.

There is some trailers on the psn showing the new psp and as I said there's a rumor that it won't use umds' so they could be done with the first psp already we'll just have to wait and see until after e3 when all info is out. Ohh shit I'm doing this on my phone and I can't delete the arrows in the quote so look under every section of things you said I have replied to each a space under each one sorry for the confusion

i prefer the psp.

i like the type of game selection on psp more than nintendo ds. i find there's way too many kiddie and shovelware type games on the DS. the PSP has more of a mature selection of games and better graphics.

i also like the fact that i can watch movies, listen to music, view pics, and surf the web with the built in web browser ...all right out of the box with psp.

i also like the nice big screen on the psp.

i like the nintendo ds, i don't hate it. i think dual screens and touch screen are cool, but i just prefer the PSP.

at the E3 show yesterday, sony showed a great lineup of new games coming out for the psp. games like Motorstorm, Little Big Planet, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy ...and more ...all new titles in those series, too.

looked like a great lineup.

Ya, finally Sony has some great games coming out for the PSP, but it might be another 6-12 months until we see them =(.

the new psp the psp go doesn't sound to great it looks a little cool but smaller screen no umds no thanks what does sound cool about it is the fact that it has 16 gigs of internal space plus bluetooth but doesn't really seem that mush cooler but hmm fuck it I'll still get it

if u like more kiddy games like mario or pokemon then DS
and if u like more cool games like medal of honor or tekken then psp

i own a psp and proud of it :D :p
so vote is in for psp

another thing i forgot to mention that i really like about the psp is the playstation store can be accessed from it.

you can download demos, videos, ps1 classics, UMD games, other games, etc right to your psp.

last night i downloaded the Rockband: Unplugged demo. was pretty cool actually. too bad they wont let you play a complete song all the way through. i know it's a demo, but still.

Final Fantasy 7 is available on the store now, too.

i might end up getting that.

I like the PSP because of it's super screen, which is more easier to watch movies than iPod's or DSs (if they can). But I like PSP mainly because it has the rights to Gran Turismo :1orglaugh

I'd like to get a PSP sometime, but not the new $250 Go! announced at E3. I prefer Sony in general and the games seem much more mature and developed.

As for the DS, the only justification I can give for buying one is the new Pokemon games (they are fun though childish). But even then that is not nearly enough reason to get a DS.

Childish games are not a bad thing. DS has a ton of great games and a few of my favorite RPG's: FF4-6 remakes, Dragon Quest and Castlevania series.

I mainly use my PSP to play old school emulators since sony hasn't released anything good in the past few months. After e3 I'm glad Sony is showing more love.

I always hate these discussions and I think they may be less relevant in the current gen of multi-platform gaming. There's enough love spread around throughout each system that if you chose just one, you'd probably be perfectly well off. No longer is there a dominance of the market like back during the Ninny v. Sega days...The producers realize that gamers are spread out and I think they saturate the market enough for everyone to find something.

I'm a fairly big RPG nerd, I suppose, so of the two I would go with the DS. Mostly I have a follow the Dragon Quest mentality when it comes to such is probably why. Where Enix decides to put their flagship series is usually where RPGs flourish and I think the handheld switch is no exception (perhaps DQX will liven up the RPG market on the Wii). While many of the bigger names you hear about are mostly remakes and ports, the system also has its fair share of unique titles in all genres as well as plenty of spin-offs.

I wouldn't count the PSP out either though as I'm fairly excited to see more of FFvsXIII as well as the new sequel to the Parasite Eve series with the 3rd Birthday...

So right now, I would give the edge to DS for having an already impressive stock of games under its belt, but I think both of them may be just starting to fill out...I still say the PSP should just be a PS2-controller inspired design with the screen in the middle of it...Having only two shoulder buttons and one 'stick'/nub cuts the experience in half too often...

psp all the way the ds i hated there were no good games unless your 10 or something i always thought Nintendo was a company for little kids and could't make a good teen or m game so ds :( psp :D

om3ga

It's good to be the king...
I like both...but at the moment DS shades it for me, due to the games (currently taking on a mate to see who can finish Pokemon Platinum first)

I own a PSP. I've tried out DS, but I didn't like it. PSP has more features than DS, and it is worth of the money I've paid for.
