PS3 firmware update

firmware version 3.00

Just updated the firmware on my PS3 and noticed that many new features have been added to the update, including BBC iplayer support and a snazzy new theme. :nanner:

Heres the complete list of updates, these are for the PAL european territory (UK), NTSC updated may vary slightly: :thumbsup:

The one thing I don't like as much is the squared boxes around the friends on the list.

Agreed for both parts. The glitter is so pretty! And the boxes around the names on your friend's list is pretty lame. I like how they have a "What's New" section as well.

But is it backwards compatible? That's the only thing I don't like about the PS3. As far as I know, the last version didn't play the Playstation or PS2 games.

The update did bring some cool stuff. Did you guys see the Little big planet dynamic theme? its real nice. But the doozy Im still waiting for is the cross game party and private chat.

iPlayer support is really good, one thing truly lacking on 360. I like the glitter too though, negates the cheap-looking-ness of the slim PS3.

Every PS3 has been PS1 backwards compatible. PS3 is no longer PS2 backwards though. I understand where the consumers are coming from when they want PS2 backwards compatible, but at the same time I understand where Sony is coming from as well. With a PS2 being $100, it's really not that hard to get your hands on one. Don't wanna spend that much? They're even cheaper used. Not only that, but damn near everyone has had a PS2, and damn near everyone has a working PS2.

EDIT: Someone wanna confirm this? I read somewhere a few years back that DVDs play at higher RPMs than a Blu-Ray disc, which is another reason why PS3 isn't PS2 backwards anymore.

psn store......look for LittleBIGplanet dynamic theme under themes and wallpapers or new releases.

At least they could make God of war and God of war II backwards compatible.

I have a PS2 and 3 and I recently replaced my old PS3 (warranty).
I'm a little pissed about the backwards compatibility due to the ease of use. I like being able to swap out games in one system.

Yeah, I hear ya. It's definitely convenient to be able to play any game on 1 console. I like being able to go from MGS3 right into MGS4 and not switch systems.

Isnt backward compatibility enabled on only certain models? This is not firware feature.

Yes the one reason I updated for iPlayer. I am happy with my shiny non slim version!

There was a neat little feature they have added to the .avi playbacks, using the PS3 controller you can control the playback speed via the right analog stick (sort of like a jog/shuttle facility)!

The firmware update is pretty cool, having the dynamic themes and stuff. But there are some problems, some which have been cured by the 3.01 firmware update, but some not yet sadly enough...

For us Europeans it should be downloadable since yesterday. I haven't checked it though.... (Source: playstationpure.be)
