Is there a way to make the backround in your profile see through so that the picture that is uploaded is able to be seen w/o being blocked by the menu, visitor messeges, ect?

I don't think there's a way to make it transparent. Some people have set the area with the same picture to make it look transparent I think.
Beyond that, you might try googling it. I haven't spent an extensive amount of time playing with the background myself.
