Processor Speed

I bought a cheap computer package at work- for $300- for a Lenovo 3000 J115 7387 Series (they don't make em anymore). It has a Sempron processor, and only 1.8 G speed (most are dual core) which I hear is low end. But I'm more of a casual user-I'm basically going to download (umm porn obviously), surf, email, and burn DVD's and CD's. Thats about it. No gaming or photoshop. Is this Sempron processor sufficient. Or is it the proverbial "you get what you pay for" situation. Is it better to take slow-ass Vista off, and put back XP- the tech guys at work said for an older machine, XP should have been the OS to put on. It was a pre-configured deal.

1.8 is sufficient for your intended needs. Normally, games and graphic intensive programs require the higher processing speeds. The more important thing for you would probably be memory. The more you have the larger your buffers can be for video and file burning. Minimum these days should be a gigabyte of ram.

Couple comments...

1) There were three different stock optical drives available on that machine, and only one of them could burn DVD's. You mentioned a desire to do that, so You Might want to double check your drive (if you haven't already).

2) I would stick with Vista in this case. As old as it is, the Sempron 3400 is still a 64 bit processor, and in my experience Vista will take better advantage of that than XP Pro x64 (which is the version of XP you'd want to get if you did indeed downgrade).

Not a bad little machine for the price. I would say its a good buy.

This PC you bought seems a great deal.

I have a little older one with the same characteristics but not Lenovo, mine is custom. I bought it 6 months ago with a double price and at that time it seemed like a fantastic bargain. Now it's not:dunno:

Don't take Vista off as it might not work with XP at all. Some of the fans inside do not work with XP, just check this out before you do anything.

too much emphasis is put on CPU speeds nowadays.
My PC is happily running a 1GHz Athlon (overclocked to 1250GHz) I can play the likes of HL2 and Farcry with no problems.

Exactly and a good video card does wonders for an old system.

Well yeah.. but those are 3-4(soon 4-5) year old games.

I dont mean to call ya out on that, but.. anything can run those apps these days. ;)

Just this last xmas I bought a computer for my roomie so we could coop and deathmatch and so he could actually browse the net. (150$ computer, cheap as shite)

And he could play damn near anything. At least farcry posed no problems at 1280x1024 with med to max detail. I threw a couple of sticks of leftover SDRAM in there, made sure everything was optimized, then threw him in the driver's seat for a few games Warcraft 3 and WoW, and whatever else we found worth playing.

Your...words.... cutting.... so..deep.... so..hurtful...

Ah what the hell... the way PC technology is going a PC you buy today, will be out of date come Christmas.
