King Curtis and The Original Sheik were 2 of the pioneers of hardcore wrestling. Then Memphis, Florida, and Puerto Rico had their hardcore bloodbaths as well.
Japan took it up a notch really taking things to the extreme before ECW. W*ING, FMW. IWA
Japan, and Big
Japan Pro Wrestling were the main
Japanese promotions booking hardcore matches.
Many of you may remember Corporal Kirschner from 1980s WWF. He had an issue with drugs and he never returned to the promotion. He re-invented himself as Leatherface in
Japan and became one of the better hardcore workers. Those Horror Movie gimmicks were really over with the
Japanese fans at that time.
On December 13, 1994, the Leatherfaces faced two popular wrestlers, Shoji Nakamaki and Hiroshi Ono, in a Double Hell Deathmatch. In a match that would become a classic within hardcore wrestling, Kirchner broke kayfabe after the match and ripped off a piece of the bed of nails, placed it on Ono's throat and then executed a leg drop onto the patch of nails. He then powerbombed Ono onto the bed of nails. Kirchner afterward left the IWA, with the promotion claiming that he was fired in an attempt to salvage Ono's destroyed reputation.
