Pickens calls off massive wind farm in Texas

HOUSTON – Plans for the world's largest wind farm in the Texas Panhandle have been scrapped, energy baron T. Boone Pickens said Tuesday, and he's looking for a home for 687 giant wind turbines.

Pickens has already ordered the turbines, which can stand 400 feet tall — taller than most 30-story buildings.

"When I start receiving those turbines, I've got to ... like I said, my garage won't hold them," the legendary Texas oilman said. "They've got to go someplace."

Pickens' company Mesa Power ordered the turbines from General Electric Co. — a $2 billion investment — a little more than a year ago. Pickens said he has leases on about 200,000 acres in Texas that were planned for the project, and he might place some of the turbines there, but he's also looking for smaller wind projects to participate in. He said he's looking at potential sites in the Midwest and Canada.

The last time this was talked about on the forum it seemed like he had some genuine motives for his plan. Now it seems to me like his motives were Jackson, Grant, and Franklin, but there weren't enough of them to keep his interest.

Sounds like he's looking for the g'ment to help subsidize his efforts. It only makes sense since he campaigned his idea instead of actually doing it.

I asked myself when I saw his ads during the election cycle....why do you need to campaign a worthwhile business venture?? Well, you do so if you're looking for investors...in this case I think he was looking for Unc. Sam to jump in and leverage his risks...

The guy came across as some sort of energy good Samaritan but at bottom he is just a business man.:2 cents:

I'm surprised that you guys really believed a texas oil baron was inrterested in charity, but then I guess a lot of people believed al gore too.

The truth is that it is still a good idea and the government should be investing in it, and the fact that this guy had the foresight to see that you could make a lot of money while doing something worthwhile sets a good example for others to follow.

When the presidential race was in full swing, I remember seeing a lot of him. I'd always wondered what happened with his plan!

In Texas, the problem lies in getting power from the proposed site in the Panhandle to a distribution system, Pickens said in an interview with The Associated Press in New York. He'd hoped to build his own transmission lines but he said there were technical problems.

Wind power is a big part of the "Pickens Plan," which was announced a year ago Wednesday. Pickens has spent $60 million crisscrossing the country and buying advertising in an effort to reduce the nation's reliance on foreign oil.

"It doesn't mean that wind is dead," said Pickens, who runs the Dallas-based energy investment fund BP Capital. "It just means we got a little bit too quick off the blocks."

Pickens realizes that you just can't throw money at a problem and it takes care of itself. Money must be spent wisely to get the results that you are after.

Unfortunately the politicians in Washington do not understand this and probably never will.
