Rommel was a great tactician, but often underestimated supply requirements in the desert. Often, his attacks were ruined simply because of fuel and ammo problems (especially during Crusader). The best Axis commander in Europe was probably Manstein.
Best Allied commander? That would be Slim. In Europe, I might have give the nod to Koniev.

Agreed on the Rommel thing but I doubt it was a lack of understanding on logistics and supply lines. The third reich was over extended and Hitler just couldnt send him any ****. They allocated pretty much most of there man power and supplies to operation barbarossa( Invasion of Russia)
FACT is if Hitler didnt have some romantic ***** of allying with Britain as he thought them kin....They are pretty much cousins in a way well their royal ****** was. We would all be speaking German now, The US couldnt even have bailed out Europe as they would have had no staging areas and this is way before the Naval abilities and power projection the US has nowadays.....World War 2 pretty much seen the advent of the aircraft carrier. But even today the US needs friendly allies so they got on the ground bases and air bases.

PS> Well maybe they could but it would have made D day look like a picnic......And would have been Russia and the US in the war just.

Again, the question is so subjective based on one's individual definition of a what constitutes a "commander". It could be "leader", "strategist", "tactician", "warrior"....a lot of things. I could make an argument that General Chuikov was the greatest commander of WWII because, without the extremely difficult and protracted struggle at Stalingrad that ended in a Russian victory, the outcome of the war would likely have been quite different. All of the commanders mentioned so far as worthy of consideration.

Patton was both gutsy and crazy. The perfect mix for President Of The World.

I always liked what some of Pattons men said about him.Patton had the nickname of "old ***** and guts".Some of the americans serving under him were heard to say "yeah our ***** and his guts".

Well same can be said of monty....To be honest World War 2 was a ***** bath. I know technology came along way in comparison to World War 1 but you still had a good chance of actually seeing the enemy, Seeing who you ****** or even getting up close and personal. Nowadays you be shelling the fuck outta a grid area and shooting suppressive fire while conserving ammo and I pretty much get the general idea that you dont see the enemy half the fucking time. Probably why some soldiers go ballistic and shoot up a village or something....Tension. Vietnam the same shooting smoke and jungle canopies.

Unless your a sniper or pathfinder, Kicking down some doors or something. Basically point is men where hardy as fuck back then and war was even more visceral. Dont get me wrong its a horrid affair today still but thats bombs and aerial **** mostly.
