Patton....Montgomery has a known quote about sitting behind the lines and having plenty of replacements for his men.

Patton was both gutsy and crazy. The perfect mix for President Of The World.

Patton. He had the balls and the action to back it all and still go the distance to show he isn't afraid.

In a face off between these two it has to be ***** and guts patton. He just had far better leadership qualities, Think it was suggested well my grandfather admired him and told me he was the kinda dude that led by example. Montgomery's quote and attitude towards his men. And the fact Rommel took rings around him in North Africa, It wasn't until Germany was seriously over extended did he make any real leeway.

To be honest though I count Napolean as the greatest military leader. This guy actually turned around a battle by going down to the front and leading his men the old fashion way, Thats no pussy officer. No offense to the brits and their Nelson and Wellington bigging it up. Yet again Napolean was a over extended foe. Moral of the story dont fucking invade Russia especially if its coming near winter, The natives are tough as fuck, Well used to there winter and the country is fucking invasion proof.

I'd say the same of China and USA, If by some flook anyone managed to make one those three capitulate with conventional warfare, Your in for one hellish guerilla warfare campaign.

I think Patton was the most over rated commander in the European theatre. He was great out gobbling up territory unopposed, while Montgomery fought against the best the Germans had to offer on the Western Front. It happened in North Africa, Sicily and France.

Also, my 2 great uncles served in the 101st Airborne and they hated Patton. Mostly because of Patton troops shooting down dozens of planes full of American paratroopers in Sicily.

In speaking of the Battle of the Bulge where the 101st was pinned down at Bastogne, my Uncle Joe said, “Patton didn’t save us. We didn’t need saving, we just needed him to bring is more ammunition.”

I know a few people who served with Patton under his command. One disliked him and the others liked him. It all comes down to personal preference and opinion.

I can't choose one over the other. They were both immensely effective in their own ways. It's like comparing Guderian and Rommel.

they were both unbelievably talented leaders. they both had some great victories and both had some bad defeats. in the end i chose Patton because of his tenacity, but i would gladly have voted for "both"

That's a good point...although I think I have to go with Patton. He would lead from the front, which I'd admire. That could be extremely stupid though, depending on your attitude. In reality, it is a crap shoot I guess.

It has to be borne in mind that they exisited in different situations.Montgomery had been badly wounded in WW1 and was determined to learn from his experiences. He never allowed unavoidable casualties and usually only moved when he had an advantage. This made him look cautious but in fact he hadn't got resources to squander.Britain was really scraping the barrel and manpower was precious. He was opposed to attacking on a broad front because of his WW1 experiences but was overruled.
It's quite possible that Montgomery was the better commander for British ****** and Patton's style was more appropriate for the resources he had at his disposal. But I've no doubt that Eisenhower was an inspired choice as overall commander.Interestingly in the Battle of the Bulge he gave overall command to Montgomery.

Eisenhower is a politician, Naturally he would pick the safest bet. Patton was a bit of a maverick but hell thats why I like him.

Both competent commanders, but not as good as they thought they were. Both were obsessively theatrical. Neither ever really operated in a campaign where they were at a disadvantage, so it's hard to judge how great they actually were.

Eisenhower was picked over the heads of many more senior officers to be the overall commander in Europe. He was in fact only a substantive colonel at the time.He had never even been in action. He did a brilliant job dealing with people like Patton and Montgomery-both supreme egoists-and also the British and american governments. In a way it was a politician's job.
Regarding the choice of overall commander in the Bulge crisis he could perhaps see that ***** and guts wasn't the way forward and Montgomery had greater skill and ability in this type of situation.

Montgomery - Allied
Rommel - Axis

Rommel was a great tactician, but often underestimated supply requirements in the desert. Often, his attacks were ruined simply because of fuel and ammo problems (especially during Crusader). The best Axis commander in Europe was probably Manstein.
Best Allied commander? That would be Slim. In Europe, I might have give the nod to Koniev.
