Three police sergeants dead, suspect killed in East Oakland gunbattles

Oakland Tribune

OAKLAND — In the most horrific day of Oakland Police Department history, three police sergeants were shot to death by the same gunman within two hours of each other. A fourth officer involved in a second shooting with the suspect also was wounded and is in extremely critical condition Saturday night.

The three veteran officers killed were all sergeants: Erv Romans, 43, , Dan Sakai, 35, and Mark Dunakin, 41,, police said. This was the first time that any sergeants in the department have been slain. Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord is on life support at Highland Hospital. A fifth officer was grazed by a bullet. He was treated and released from the hospital.

The suspect is identified as Lovell
Mixon, 27, of Oakland who was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon
, has not been released, police said.

Was this supposed to be good or bad news? ;)

Maybe, they will take criminals and releasing them more seriously now.

I'm sure that there will be some that will be elated :dunno:
Not here.

Oh yea, for those who didn't open the link, an additional officer is on life support and another was grazed by a bullet.

Could the City of Oakland pay enough to recruit police officers after this ?
The Federal Government will probably annex that city.

RIP, gentlemen :hatsoff:

Holy hell, I thought those police have bullet proof vests (or at least the SWAT do). How did they get killed so easily when they've trained for this kind of thing? Maybe the bullets he used is armor piercing but it's still very surprising.

Looks like a rifle was used in this shooting, for certain, hitting officers in the head.
I will speculate no further.

sad

The Suspect is dead and all the police said was an assault weapon was used. They wouldn't say what kind.
Personally I stay the hell out of Oakland.

I remember a while back ago when some guy got an AK and shot up the police station. It was in Oakland too.

But a couple of months ago, police shot some man in the head while he was already in handcuffs(in Oakland)

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
IMO I don't understand why theirs not a higher security protocol for parole violators or criminals with a pension for violence or atleast the capability of violence or unpredictable behavior? :dunno:

I can't fathom why prisoners, former felons, felony parolee's that have the "going out in a blaze of glory type attitude" are not treated as EXTREMELY HIGH RISK INDIVIDUALS and or possible combatants? and therefore, before you engage such individuals. THE POLICE MUST make sure they have plenty of adequate backup to lessen the chance or even eradicate the possibility of these kinds of disastrous incidents.

Granted the officers may have not known who they were pulling over, or what the suspect was capable of nor his intentions, but how could a suspect hide, and ultimately rack and fire a shotgun before TWO officer's can, take cover, and or return fire? it doesn't seem possible. especially with the officers in a alerted state of mind until they are able to assess the danger of the situation.:dunno:

I wanna say RIP to all the officers and pass along my condolence's to all of the victims families and friends. :angels::angels::angels::angels:

I don't think that the cycle officers in the initial pull over had any idea that the driver was this dangerous guy, maybe the vehicle wasn't registered in his name. :dunno:

We'll have to take the details as they come in.

Well, at least they're not fisherman, because then they could've had a dangerous job.

;)

And, since this was in Oakland (think!), when was the last time you saw a fisherman - acting in his vocational capacity - shoot an unarmed guy who was laying facedown and posed no threat?? ;)

Sign up to be a cop, understand the risks that come with that line of work - even if they are statistically lesser than those of other professions! (fact)

A single Bay Area Regional Transit cop, yes.

FWIW - Shooting was in the man's back for perfect record.

The BART cop in question, no doubt, will face charges for his crime and should just as anyone else.

I wonder if the cops are going to rally in the hundreds and break out business windows now ?

my condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Oakland Police Dept.
these senseless killings highlight to me that police PUT THEIR LIVES on the line to
protect & serve. I had a very lucky & lucrative job where I had to put my reputation
on the line daily but NEVER my life.
whenever I am critical of police -and they know they are not above criticism -I shall
remember these men who tried to get a bad guy off the streets & paid the forfeit.
May God bless them and may they rest in peace.

Apparently, you've never seen I Know What You Did Last Summer. :1orglaugh

When was the last time you saw a fisherman get gunned down for doing their job and taking scumbags off of our streets?

Same goes for fishermen.

It was 1 police officer and it appears it was an accident from the video tape of it.

Unfortunately there are plenty of black supremacists in Oakland and that's why they taunted the police after the 2 officers were killed.

Look up the Zebra murders of the 1970's. California is a hotbed of black extremism.

I think you're correct, they must have not called it in before pulling him over. He stepped out of the vehicle and shot both of them (they were motorcycle cops) then fled on foot.
