Outrage after Israeli soldiers kill wrong man in raid on suspected Hamas militants

A credit to the word commando, shooting an old man as he lays asleep in bed guilty of nothing more than being Palestinian, but then again I guess there's no such thing as an innocent Palestinian. At least they didn't blow the whole building up from miles away as they usually do and wasn't Obama supposed to be sorting this mess out, oh yes I remember Netanyahu told him to take a running jump and he gladly obliged.

Tensions high after Israeli commandos kill the wrong man, 65, in pre-dawn raid on suspected Hamas militant

Israeli soldiers killed a 65-year-old Palestinian in his bedroom on Friday during a pre-dawn raid to seize a Hamas suspect who lived in the same building, in what the army admitted was a mistake.

The man was shot as troops swooped on houses in the occupied West Bank to re-arrest five members of the Islamist Hamas group who had been freed from Palestinian jails just the day before.

The U.S.-backed administration of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which often co-ordinates West Bank security with Israel, rejected Hamas charges of responsibility for Amr Qawasme's death and said the blame was exclusively Israel's.

Soldiers broke into Qawasme's home, one floor above a Hamas militant, and stormed into his bedroom, his wife Sobheye said.

She heard shots and found Qawasme lying in a pool of blood.

'I was praying when they entered. I do not know how they opened the door. They put their hand to my mouth and a rifle to my head,' she told Reuters.

'I was shocked. They did not allow me to talk. I asked them, 'What did you do?' They asked me to shut up.'

Reuters Television video showed Qawasme had been shot in the head and body. Bullet casings were scattered on the floor of his room, his pillow and mattress left soaked with blood.

The Israeli army expressed regret that soldiers who went to arrest Wael Mahmoud Said Bitar -- who it said had helped plan a 2008 suicide bomb attack in which an Israeli woman was killed -- had killed a man in the house during the raid.

'Unfortunately, during this operation a man uninvolved in terror got killed in Hebron,' Brigadier General Nitsan Alon told reporters. 'We're investigating this case and we'll inform you when we have more information.'

Violence in the occupied West Bank has largely tapered off in the past few years as a result of security measures by Israel and Abbas's bolstered and foreign-trained Palestinian police.

But tension has resurged in the past week, coinciding with a deepening deadlock in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.

Last Friday, a Palestinian woman died following a protest against an Israeli barrier built across the West Bank. A local medic said the woman died after inhaling tear gas.

On Sunday, an Israeli soldier shot dead a Palestinian who approached a West Bank checkpoint holding a glass bottle.

General Alon said there was no link between the incidents and no concern that rules of engagement were being violated.

The army was in touch with Palestinian officials and would show that tear gas did not cause the woman's death, he said.

Israel and Abbas's self-rule administration have a common foe in Hamas, which rejects co-existence with the Jewish state and controls the Gaza Strip, another Palestinian territory.

Several hundred Hamas followers have been rounded up by Abbas' forces since the Palestinian split in 2007. Hamas in Gaza has similarly cracked down on members of Abbas's Fatah movement.

The Israelis sometimes chafe at Abbas's handling of the group. They were clearly irked by the Palestinian Authority's decision to release the Hamas militants on Thursday. Israeli reports said the militants, who had been on hunger strike, were freed at the request of the emir of Qatar.

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdainah said the Hamas men were freed to foster intra-Palestinian reconciliation, and Hamas had been "warned that they may be arrested by occupation forces".

But a Hamas spokesman in Gaza nevertheless said the movement "holds the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank responsible with the (Israeli) occupation for the crime".

Abbas adviser Saeb Erekat said a complaint had been filed with the United States and European Union over the incident.

'We strongly condemn this cold-blooded killing and the arrest of brothers from Hamas. The Israeli government shoulders responsibility for the lives of those arrested,' he said.

Do I really have to say it? Well, it won't have a chance against your prejudices anyway. But what the heck?

The IDF kills civilians by accident. Hamas kills civilians on purpose.

I've decided not to get involved with the israel/arab problems anymore, not even an opinion.

Sorry, but Israel kills them on purpose, too. Remember how Israel attacked Gaza because Hamas were killing Israelis, and compare the deaths prior to the war. While doing the comparison, better keep in mind the videos from the war and Goldstone Report.

Plus, Israel created Hamas, by not giving a chance to PLO.

but then again I guess there's no such thing as an innocent Palestinian.
And having said this, you consider yourself innocent? Wait, you don't live in an occupied land. Have I guessed it right?

You know what would be awesome? If all Israelis, Palestinians, and the areas they are constantly at war over were obliterated by nuclear weapons. That would be totally chill.

I don't have any sympathy for deaths on any side anymore. It's just meh.

This is absolutely horrible that this happened, but let's be honest, the thread title could have gone any number of ways:

Re: Outrage after Israeli soldiers kill wrong man in raid on suspected Hamas militant

Part of the problem with Israel is that hte hawks appear to be in charge - that NEVER leads to anything good.

And they've done something really stupid; they've started naming their weapons after their religion, so we have the Merkava tank, the chariot of fire.
That means that every time an enemy splats a Merkava (and the hawks don't make that hard - using tanks in urban and mountanous terrain vastly increases the risk of loss even for a tank as good as Merkava) they splat a little bit of the Jewish faith.and in 25 years it may not be such a good rifle any more, which will make their faith look not as good any more.

The Tavor named after mount Tabor may be good now (offhand I'm not saying if it's good or not btw) , but when the enemy inevitably captures one, that's a little bit of the Jewish faith captured. and in 25 years it may not be such a good rifle any more, which will make their faith look not as good any more.

They made a mistake. Maybe they make some more mistakes in the process of fighting Hamas, still I see it like GregC:

Hamas states absolutely clear they want to wipe out the whole of Israel and they go off on 'soft targets' like cafés etc and kill on purpose people who aren't even CLOSE to be a fighter in the ongoing war. 'Women, children what the hell, you need to die, jewish scum'.

If the people in Gaza and West Bank would assit the Israelis in getting rid of their Hamas suppressors, this could be over. But they let them stay in the same houses and schools and so hospitals, firing rockets from there, and producing more.

So the IDF has no other choice: They HAVE to get in there and take the Hamas fighters where they hide.

LOL Easier said than done, you think people can openly defy Hamas. If you lived in Germany during WW2 and told Nazi officials you would never salute Hitler and that you'd hide any Jews that you'd come across what do you think they would have done to you? Same in Northern Ireland, years ago a Catholic woman/mother tended to a dying British soldier on the street rather than leave him to rot and the IRA kidnapped her and killed her for this so you think anyone will do anything like this again? Same in Afghanistan with the Taliban or Vietnam with the Vietcong, you think you can openly tell them to piss off and not face any repercussions? By your logic why didn't the German people just rise up overthrow the Nazis instead of cowering and let them ruin the country, truth is they were either scared of being killed along with their families or they agreed in principle with what the Nazis were trying to achieve even if they didn't approve of the methods, the same can be said of all the 'hot spots' I mentioned. :2 cents:

I did not say it would be easy. And I have living relatives that experienced that back in the day here in Germany.

The palestinians who want to help the IDF take out the Hamas could talk to them when they go to a border station, acting like they get searched inside a station there. Which really is not THAT hard to do, I understand there is quite a bit of searching going on.

Bear in mind from their Point Of View Hamas are freedom fighters resisting occupation so why would they give them up to the Israelis, no Irishmen would give up IRA members and no Frenchmen would have given up any members of the French resistance. And even if Hamas disappeared tomorrow do you really think the current right wing Israeli government will suddenly accept the creation of a Palestinian state, they can't even agree to stop building new houses on occupied land which is why the current peace talks are dead in the water. With both Hamas and Netanyahu's coalition at the helm there will never be peace as they are both stubborn and religious fanatics fighting over land that isn't really worth the blood constantly being spilt on it. I still don't see why the whole area can't be made into one country with all the Abrahamic religions protected in a secular constitution, currently Christians are excluded as you have a Jewish state as well as a potential Muslim state. Force them to live together and get along and I honestly believe the common muslim and jewish people will live peacefully together side by side, I see it everyday in East London where I live, It's only the extremists of Hamas and Likud that stir up al the hatred.

I don't think that peace will be settled. If you permanently get rid of the hezzbollah, al aksah martyr brigades, fatah and hamas as well as control that the money given to palestinians goes for developping their economy and not for developping kassam rockets, buying stolen kalashnikovs and developp kamikazi then maybe there would be peace. Iran and Syria are also problems because they are financing terrorism.
