PS any advice on being able to post gifs? Always used to be able to and I see some still getting posted, but I never can

Simply copy and paste the direct URL to the image (preferably not hotlinked) and put it between IMG tags in square brackets.

If you are trying to upload them as attachments using FreeOnes then it is likely failing because the file size is too big.

But bear in mind that an animated GIF it wouldn't work anyway on FreeOnes servers. e.g. This is what another GIF I uploaded looks like. It's just the first frame, it doesn't animate.
