Oh dear! Problem...

I decided to download a realplayer... needed it for some video's and stuff.

Ever since I've done that, whenever I have tried to open a clip from a site - it has automatically started to download the video in order to play it - rather than it just opening straight to windows media player as it used to.

One way of solving this would be to get rid of real-player, and then it would go back to normal.

So basically, I want to change the settings so that when I click on a clip, it just opens it straight with windows media player, and DOES NOT start downloading it - and then play with real player.

If any you could help, would be very much appreciated. Cheers.

I got rid of real player for that reason. I find I don't need it.

Change the defaults for media files from real player to Windows Media Player.

If YM's suggestion doesn't work (which it should) you could try going to start, then run, then type in msconfig. Hit the OK button and you'll be taken to the system configuration utility. Click the startup tab. If the box next to RealTray (or RealPlayer) is checked, uncheck it.

Also, if the RealPlayer icon is visible on your taskbar, shut it down (right click to do so) before doing the above.

If I remember right (haven't used it in ages), after each use of Real Player the program will reinstall itself in your startup menu, but so long as you follow the two steps above after each use, it shouldn't screw with your system.

ok. There is a other way that works with any file type that does not open in the application of your choice. Since i have no english version of Windows i am guessing what the buttons might be labled in english so try the best match :)

1. right click on a file that opens in the wrong application (eg. .avi file)
2. chose "open with" from the menu, a additional menu unfolds
3. chose the last entry ("choose application") a litle window should open
4. under "suggestet applications" choose the player of your choice and...
5. ... make shure you've checkt the checkbox that says something like "allways open this filetype with this application"
6. click OK

btw. have a look at vlc player it plays everything even if you don't have the codec. It is written by students of the university of Paris. http://www.videolan.org/

Thank you all so much.

I solved the problem in the end - I just downloaded Windows Media Player 11... and the same thing happened, but it's all gravy with WMP :)

Y'all rock though

Excellent!

(I hope the wave file I sent you to experiment with was helpful....
It was kinda cold that night.....you do know about shrinkage, right?)

;)

Glad it worked out for you :)
