Obama, Medvedev sign treaty

What does that mean signing with a russian "second officer" ?

I guess Putin is visiting Hugo Chavez and therefore couldn't make himself available.

Sheesh, what ever happened to r-e-s-p-e-c-t ?

Like I said, it sure showed Japan.
What do you mean by Japan?!? Do you mean all the innocent men, women & children that were killed in the blast & by the subsequent effects of radiation as well as the legacy of birth defects etc? Yeah, it sure showed them & reason enough for nothing like it to ever ever happen again!

& in what way were Japan a rogue country or terrorists?

I mean the country that invaded China, commited genocide, and then launched an unprovoked attack on the United States and commited thousands of crimes against POWs.

I don't really see what we need nuclear weapons for?!?

I don't know about you, but I use them to clean my toilet. :dunno:

Highly effective.

But seriously, folks, this is horrible news - My lifelong dream of witnessing a nuclear holocaust seems that much further from being possible now...

Don't start none... won't be none.

No need for these weapons. The true horrors of them were shown during WW2, and don't believe the bullshit government story that it saved countless lives, they needed to experiment on how the bomp would effect a large concentrated population, the Japanese were not saints but I thought the USA held the moral and ethical high ground in that war. You'll notice that for such a appalling event, no politicians or the US media hardly ever mentions them by name, guilt perhaps? I still found it sickening that a supposedly civilised country like the US could drop a bomb on a residential city full of women and children (most men were off fighting) knowing that 100s of 1000s would be killed instantly and the 'survivors' would die slow agonizing deaths. The US can accuse other countries all they want off wanting to acquire and use atomic weapons, but they remain the only nation to have ever used them on civilians and the world will never forget that. I await the responses of 'well that's war', 'innocent people get killed in wars', 'collateral damage' or 'well they started it', if that's enough justification for you and puts your mind at rest then I envy you.

You do know that if the US hadn't bombed Japan with the nukes, millions more people would have died. Worse, think of what would have happened if the Nazis had the bomb and we didn't... or if the USSR would have had it.

Sorry, but while in a perfect world nukes are certainly a bad thing, without the US having them the 20th century would have had been even more bloody and brutal.

dude, you are 100% mother fucking wrong. that bomb put the japs out of commission, and made them think "hmm, they have the biggest bomb ever made, maybe we should surrender". if they hadnt dropped that damn bomb, we would have invaded, and by "we" i mean "the USA, Soviets, UK, etc etc" and countless lives would have been lost because of a foolish and out of date country couldnt see the fucking light at the end of the tunnel, which happened to be a train coming to hit em in the face.

so yea, whether we had to test it or not, its one of the best decisions we ever made in time of war.

You know that the atomic bombings weren't the only thing that made Japan surrender, right? The Soviets declaring war and attacking Manchukio had a lot to do with it.

It has more to do with experimenting new weapons and saving money as each day at war millions are spent, you can still see that today. Japan was as good as defeated and on the back foot, no planes, no ships and demoralised soldiers who were committing suicide in the thousands. At that point no one could've been invaded by anyone, plus the USA hated the USSR but had to appease them to keep them onside, they then spent the next 40 years fighting them unofficially in Vietnam, Korea and Afghanistan (arming the very Mujahadeen that fights you now but instead you call them the Taliban hoping people won't notice). So why not drop a bomb on Saudi Arabia?, 15 of the 19 9/11 bombers were from there. In fact has anyone even phoned the Saudi King and raised the issue?

Don't feel too bad. Both sides will still just pretend that they're disarming more nukes than what they really are. Your dream is still a very possible reality.

yea i know. with the germans out of commission, the Soviets had the ability to turn more attention to the Japs. for the amount we hated them after the war, the russians sure did help keep us going.

i was merely just ranting about the bomb though. ive only been awake since 230ish, so it was my first post of the day

We're not disposing of our entire arsenal and neither are the Russians. As for our adversaries they include Pakistan, Iran, Syria, China, and North Korea.

This was already being negotiated under W. Obama kept it going and I'm glad to see it done. The US and Russia do not need their massive stockpiles. While the US and Russia have been talking even independently reducing their stockpiles. But this does what hasn't been done for 2 decades, in writing.

The only thing I continue to disagree with Obama and most others are the very real need for updating 500 tactical nuclear weapons. The US and Russia really doesn't need more than a few hundred strategic nuclear weapons to basically say "don't try it." But the US could really use a massive update on tactical nuclear weapons for dealing with a variety of threats -- from tit-for-tat to underground utilization.

In any case, this is good to see, and it's about time.

That's simplistic bullshit and you should really try reading a book sometime. The island hopping campaign showed what Japan was willing to do to inflict casualties on their enemy. An invasion of the Japanese main islands would have been catastrophic on all sides, but mostly on the Japanese civilian populace. If an invasion had actually occurred, their entire culture would have been wiped out, period. There has been study after study that has concluded that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs wound up saving lives.

It should also be mentioned that the world needed a demonstration. No matter how WWII turned out, we were moving into the nuclear age. People being what they are, we had to see a graphic example of the true destructive properties of these weapons. No bomb blast in an empty desert or remote Pacific atoll was going to make people realize what bad news these bombs are. The world is what the world is. I'm sorry for those two cities but better them than NYC, Los Angeles, London or Paris.

(arming the very Mujahadeen that fights you now but instead you call them the Taliban hoping people won't notice).

Dude, don't be an idiot. We are very well aware of how Afghanistan played out and there has never been any illusion of people noticing or not.
