US President Barack Obama is the target of more than 30 potential death threats a day and is being protected by an increasingly over-stretched and under-resourced Secret Service, according to a new book.
Since Mr Obama took office, the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 per cent from the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, author of In the President's Secret Service.

Some threats to Mr Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicised, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.

Most however, are kept under wraps because the Secret Service fears that revealing details of them would only increase the number of copycat attempts. Although most threats are not credible, each one has to be investigated meticulously.

According to the book, intelligence officials received information that people associated with the Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabaab might try to disrupt Mr Obama's inauguration in January, when the Secret Service co-ordinated at least 40,000 agents and officers from some 94 police, military and security agencies.

First of all, he's the first African-American President. Did we not see this coming? And am I the only one that read the bold text above and started laughing. First of all, these masterminds, don't even have guns. So the first part of their plot is to rob a gun store. Now let's say that's successful (probably wouldn't be anyway and it would end right there), how do they plan on finding 88 black people to shoot? You've already robbed a gun store, are you going to walk around downtown looking for people to shoot at? Surely, police wouldn't notice that.

Also, decapitating 14 people is going to require some pretty good knives. Where are they getting the equipment for that? Where do they plan on finding people willing to be decapitated? And now, the best part of their plan: drive to DC and assassinate the President. Ideally for them, they've killed 102 people - one of the largest sprees in American history. How in the blue hell are they getting from Tennessee to DC unnoticed? Minivan - all right, everyone pile into my Astro, time to take out the President! What are they doing when they get there, knock on the door of the White House? Maybe Obama will answer...

If all of the plots against Obama are as far fetched and idiotic as this one, the Secret Service really doesn't have much to worry about.

I would think the wonderful people who came up with this plan lack the kind of abstract thought that would allow them to foresee what these actions would entail.

And Obama has pissed off a lot of people already by just being who he is. BTW, he's not the one who ascertains which threats are credible. That would be the Secret Service's purview and they have to check every threat, regardless of how serious it may be.

and the article also mentions cutbacks in the Secret Service. Not a good coincidence.

Also, the article didn't talk about deadly clothing, 24788, so I don't know why you mentioned that...
