I'll try to explain the way it works.

Let's say go to a website and the address is http://somewebsite.com. You see a link there that will take you to a photo http://somewebsite.com/photo.jpg. What happens when you click on the link is that you not only ask the server handling this website to give you that photo but you also inform the server where did you learn about that photo. In this case when you click a link you send a request which says:

I was on the http://somewebsite.com, clicked a link and want to see this nice http://somewebsite.com/photo.jpg

Someone who went through this route will see the picture. If you paste this address (http://somewebsite.com/photo.jpg) somewhere else though (e.g. this forum) the request server is getting is this:

I was on the http://board.freeones.com, clicked a link and want to see this nice http://somewebsite.com/photo.jpg

http://misshybrid.com/ is configured in a way that it prevents accessing photos if one did not access the photo through the gallery on the http://misshybrid.com/ server. The way to overcome this issue is to post links to galeries, not links to photos themselves on the board. Another option is to disable this protection, but there are cost-related reasons why you don't want to do that.

Hot-linking is a term used on the Internet. Hot-linking is when someone uses a link to an image that is saved on another website instead of saving a copy of the image on the website that the picture will be shown on. For example, instead of saving picture.gif and loading it on to their own website, the person uses a link to the picture as http://website.com/picture.gif. Hot-linking uses the bandwidth of the person who owns the website where the picture is stored. This costs that person money. This is why many website owners are using .htaccess files and uploading it to their websites.

In some cases website owners use the .htaccess file to replace any hot-linked images with an offensive image to deter any other website owners from hot-linking.
