Just so you can say you know more about candy stripers than you ever hoped to, and more......candy stripers got their name from uniform female volunteers wore at the time. Female hospital volunteers, and only females, wore white uniforms with red stripes....like a candy cane...thus the name "candy striper." Male volunteers of the day actually wore a more traditional uniform, and thus a dude was, and would NEVER have been referred to as a candy striper, only chicks. Anyway, today, both male and female volunteers wear the same traditional/conventional uniforms.....and the term "candy striper" is no longer used, relegating itself to a bygone era.
Long story short, though there have always been male and female hospital volunteers, and a "candy striper" was a hospital volunteer, like I said before, only female volunteers were ever referred to as a "candy striper".....unless some dude was like Klinger on M*A*S*H, and he liked to wear women's clothes or something.
