New year's rockets/signal rockets

The Times Square thing is just a touristy thing. Much the same as few New Yorkers have ever been to the Statue of Liberty. Atlantic City has been the perfect place for me on NYE. You don't have to go to the pay parties since all of the casinos set up bars with bands and DJs in their open areas. Hats and noise makers are passed out there too. Hotels on the Boardwalk will run $400+ but I get around that. I book as early as possible off the Boardwalk and can steal one for $40 (God bless Kayak.com). Some of the hotels run free shuttle busses on NYE. If not take a 10 minute cab ride in and it costs the same as the parking garages.

Yeah, most of NY is all about tourists and people deciding to move here thinking they're going to "make it big." My grandmother keeps asking me if I've gone to see the Statue of Liberty yet. Nope, I haven't, and don't really care to. Big woop. Giant green lady. Soooo exciting! Pfft.

Huh. I don't actually think I've ever been anywhere on New Year's Eve where people were lighting up fireworks.

I went to my mates place just down the road from me last year. Just sat out back on the gazebo drinking a couple of beers, and throughout the night we saw plenty of fireworks going off. At least 6 houses and real professional type fireworks too. Clearly not professionals using them, as at one point the nearest house had one go off by accident and it was some time before they let any more go lol. Luckily they didn't start any fires, as its summer here and lots of open grassed areas nearby.....

Dunno what I'm doing tomorrow night, it will depend on what my mate wants to do most likely. I would like to go out somewhere, but I wanna go to a place that's not gonna be packed or charge me 50 bucks just to get in the door!

As a dog owner, I hate them. Neighbours nearby have been letting the bloody things off since the start of this month (why I dunno). And my dogs just about have heart attacks each time...

This is the first post that made me realize that as a moderator I can no longer rep people. :(

But yeah, I've had a few dogs over the years and none of them have liked fireworks. So while I had some fondness for them as a kid I basically hate them now. Don't like it when my dog freaks out, and I can't imagine most other animals, domestic or wild, react much better.

Generally I agree and do feel bad for the animals and environment when fireworks are going off. Last year back home, I took my dog out to see the fireworks and surprisingly, he didn't mind it at all. He just went about his usual business, wanting to walk around in the grass and sniff around. He didn't jump, shake, bark, or freak out at all.

In general animals are afraid of noises so your dog behave like a service dog.

Another option; your pet is deaf

Nah, I wouldn't call it pathetic.
There was this little video someone posted once, I can't remember if it was on here or facebook, where this guy was running around with balloons everywhere, smashing things, doing all sorts of shit, and someone commented something like, "Now that's what I call self entertainment." So, doing fun stuff, like setting off fireworks, by yourself is more interesting than pathetic. You only have one life- live it up!

Harley is right and you can always post/blog here to share it with your friends on FOs :)

Okay since you (kinda) asked for it:

We in Berlin LOVE our fireworks on NYE! It's so awesome. Like I said I just bought one battery this year since I'm completely broke, but I loved watching it this year from my new appartment. I'm in a whole new area of Berlin now and didn't know how much they celebrate it in my new neighborhood yet. It was pretty good. :)

When I was younger, people used to buy and play more with fireworks during these kind of events. Nowadays it's pretty quiet... Thought they also made buying of those things harder at some point and we live in a nanny state with the big brother watching every step you take...
