I had not really considered whether or not these types of discussions fall into the category of "gossiping." Of course, in a way they do... that's fairly obvious now that I think about it. However, all that gets a bit muddled when you consider that what's happened has served to make us more aware of the safety standards in the industry, good and bad. I realize you could make those same observations using "person X" rather than giving out their name, but I, for one, think the issue is taken much seriously when a name is attached to the story.
Also, although I would agree that a person deserves to keep their private matters from going public, I think the whole idea of one's right to privacy becomes further clouded when that person has a very public persona, especially if the matter in question is somehow related to their profession.
I am one that tends to respect an individual's right to privacy, so I feel very strange taking the oppposing point of view, but this may be one of those rare times that I'm willing to make an exception.
