Need help deciding on something important :D

So my 1995 300ZX TT finally decided to blow its turbos. Im deciding whether to keep it and build it up with bigger turbos, injectors etc.... Or buy a mk3 supra turbo and drop in the 1jz with a garrett gt35r turbo from my friends totaled 240sx. Either option will require dropping several thousand dollars and a lot of time under the hood. Im in California but idgaf about the smog regulations because they suck. And no I do not want to sell it and get a camaro or another car. These are my two realistic options. Any help would be appreciated.

The rest of the 300ZX has to be getting pretty old. Suspension, body panels, mounts. How long before things start creaking, groaning and falling off?

If you're talking a new or newer Supra, I'd go with that simply for the longevity. It would be a shame to do all this work just to start a list of other problems.

The Z is in great shape. Its caged, new suspension, axles, motor/trans mounts, body reinforcing, 6 speed nismo trans etc. The only thing that is bad is the turbos pooping on me at the moment. As for the supra, I have a soft spot for the mk3 models. Have an eye on a 91 NA. As long as the shell is good im happy since a lot of the engine parts are coming from my buddies s13. Although the condition for everything other than the drive-train is still an unknown for the supra.... Im stumped.

have you thought of engine swaping the 300zx? why not put the 1jz on the 300zx?
have you thought of connecting the turbo to the air intake instead of exhaust? it'll function better.

The only engine swap I would consider on my Z is a VK56 V8 from the Titan but thats wayyy out of my league and skillset to actually fit it in the engine bay

Fuck, are we going to have to start another sub forum for the motor heads?

since it sounds like the nissan has a solid chassis and is set up well i would put the time and energy into fixing it up and getting it running prime again before delving into the supra project you mentioned.

I've got an old Maverick parked in the barn. Dropped a 351 Windsor in it a few years ago. Not a bad little sleeper.
I've always liked the '70-'73 Mavericks, and I bet it's bad-ass. When the bumpers started getting bigger, they didn't look as good to me.

I saw a '72 Pinto with a Cleveland(!) in it, but since it was in a magazine, I couldn't get too close of a look.

I love sleepers. My first car was a '76 Monte Carlo with a stock 350. I had to replace the transmission, no easy task, but made me appreciate how interchangeable GM parts are. The Monte came from the factory with an Olds rear end and was sporting a Buick transmission after I was done with it. Unfortunately rust drove me out of that car. The floor pans were too far gone. Wish I still had that car. There's not a car I've had that I don't wish I still had.

I'd keep the Nissan 300ZX. You can find Totoya Supras all day, but finding a good 300ZX in your condition is becoming more challenging and pricey. My :2 cents:.

Uh... what? All turbos are connected to the exhaust and the intake. That's how turbos function. The exhaust gas spins them and the pressurized air is fed into the intake. Engines are essentially just big air pumps and turbos simply force more air into the system. With more air, you can add more fuel and BOOM... you get more horsepower! When people talk about "boost", that's what they're talking about. Adding a bigger intercooler (liquid cooled) and/or a water/alcohol injection system will boost power by lessening detonation though - especially on older engines with less advanced ECUs.

Sweet car. I've always liked the Ferrariesque 300ZX - especially the twin turbo models. I know you didn't want to hear about cars other than the Supra, but here's one you may not have considered that's in the same vein: the Celica All-Trac. It's a sweet little turbo car from the same era as the Supra you're talking about and it's MUCH more rare than the Supra Twin Turbo. And it also has the added benefit of AWD (killer launches!). Built right, it would be like having a WRX STi before there was a WRX STi... and even though it's a 20 year old design, it's more stylish than the modern WRX (IMO).

As for fixing up your car or buying something else that'll also require major work, you're probably going to have less money invested if you just swap out the blown turbos for new ones - and do the injectors, fuel pump, might as well do the head gaskets while you're in there, etc. Did you blow both of them? Does the 300ZX have a big/small turbo setup like the Supra or are they both the same size? For quick spool-up, I'd go with a smaller unit and a bigger one. But that's just personal preference.

Until I bought a WRX several years ago, I had no idea how much of a blast turbo cars were. I've ridden in many, but never owned one until this car. With work and tuning, I've got it to about 300 hp now and it's still very drivable and ultra reliable. But when the engine or turbos eventually give up the ghost, I plan on putting either another 2.0 (built) or a massaged STI 2.5 in it.

Let us know how your project comes along. This is the most interesting thread I've seen on here in months!

Go with the Supra or go all out and get a WRX STI. The amount of power they get out of those four bangers is mind boggling!

Ohh I have looked for a celica all-trac but I have only seen one in my area (California Bay area) and its seen much better days. I dont think I can afford a MKIV supra at the moment because they are still pretty expensive. I always loved the early 90s late 80s japanese sports cars which is why I was drawn to the MKIII supra instead. Problem is that the 7M-GTE engines are bipolar at times which is why a buddy of mine offered to sell his 1JZ from a totaled 240sx he had lying around.
As for my Z, I started with a stock TT car and slowly built it suspension, body reinforcing, roll cage(streatable), and supporting turbo mods etc. The Turbos were JWT Sport 500 turbos so they werent very big. They spooled nicely and the car made a very modest 392rwhp on high boost. It was pretty much one step up from stock. Unfortunately both turbos are blown. It happened the first time I ever went autocrossing. the design of the intake are so that a single pipe will feed into both turbos. I had JWT dual pop chargers but one of them had a pretty big tear underneath which I didnt spot. Drove over a patch of pavement which had a lot of fine particles of road and very small rocks. I just found out this morning that there were several small rocks and dirt residue in the turbos (car is at the shop), so pretty much they arent salvageable. Right now its getting head work as well as the bock. Thinking about porting the heads to about 3.2l. Trans, driveline, diff, etc was also built so I dont need to worry about that. Pretty much the engine is in pieces ATM.
As for the work ahead, I saw a single turbo setup which I was soooooo tempted to do but it had a lot of custom work that was outside of my skill level. Since I have a camry hybrid also (lol) I wanted to bring out the full potential of the car. Most likely increasing the amount of injectors, beefing up the fuel system, maybe go E85, get some more sturdy shocks and most importantly get BIGGER BRAKES. (BREMBO FTW). Turbos will most likely be Garrett GTX3071Rs with all supporting equipment although I would like to use the slightly bigger GTX3076R or even the GTX3271Rs because there are wayyy too many single turbo supras that can make more power. Now this is going to take a lot of money so It might be a while before completion but I know the shop owner and he agreed to sponsor some parts in exchange for using the car for promotions and such. Ill keep you guys in the loop as much as I can. Seems like there are people who are knowledgeable in this forum which Ill be honest I wasnt expecting it from here but alcohol make you post weird things in random forums. Now this isnt set in stone so if you have any suggestions for something else with the cars of even suggestions with the Z build then feel free to post or message.
thanks a bunch :D
