I chose YES because I believe they are head-and-shoulders above the field in talent. However, I am a big Floyd fan, too. Tough choice for me. :helpme:

Art rock? The choices there seem like sort of a mix between prog rock (Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, Yes, ELP) and cheese-rock (Styx) and others that are much harder to categorize, like Beefheart and ELO and Procol Harum.

When I was like 12-17, I listened to a LOT of Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer (and Powell). They've largely fallen off my rotation list (well, almost completely), but my appreciation for bands like ELO, Pink Floyd, and Beefheart has either remained steady or gradually increased. I think the laurels heaped upon Pink Floyd for "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" are somewhat overdone, esp. considering that their early work is so utterly fantastic. Yes, I have PF's popular stuff, and I do really like it (esp. Dark Side), but still, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "Ummagumma" and stuff like that are pretty amazing. ELO's Jeff Lynne is pretty much a genius. I find even their underrated album "Time" to be something just shy of real genius. A great repeat listen.

But now, when I think "art rock" my favorite bands are largely those like Wire, Pere Ubu and Sonic Youth.

what about brian eno. anyone

I'm with you on that!

His first half dozen albums are rock solid, and he's had many highlights after that, as well.

Ok, well, perhaps this page is a bit more useful than the Wikipedia page (which I haven't even looked at; I'm assuming it's unhelpful or just cut-and-pasted from Allmusic.com):

http://wm08.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:374

And here are all of the categories that fall under "rock" - it really requires studying.

Ok, so yes, it looks like maybe I was incorrect in calling Wire or Sonic Youth "art rock" - at least according to the AllMusic definitions, but I swear I have read in numerous places that they represent "art-rock" (as well as post-punk and whatever other categories they might be able to fall under).

I would also call The Fall art rock. "Live at the Witch Trials" is an album of perfection.

I still dig that A Nice Pair album cover. The stores used to use price stickers to cover up the tits.:1orglaugh
