NAACP wants NY Post editor and cartoonist fired

NEW YORK – The head of the NAACP on Saturday urged readers to boycott the New York Post, calling a cartoon that the newspaper published an invitation to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Benjamin Todd Jealous, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, called on the tabloid to remove editor-in-chief Col Allan, as well as longtime cartoonist Sean Delonas.

Earlier this week, the newspaper apologized to anyone who might have been offended by the image printed Wednesday, which some say likens Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police in Connecticut.

Jealous said the cartoon was "an invitation to assassination."

On Thursday, after protests by notable figures including director Spike Lee, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

A spokeswoman for the newspaper referred The Associated Press to the paper's editorial when asked Saturday about the proposed NAACP boycott.

Jealous called the editorial "a half of an apology, without elaboration."

The drawing, he said, "picks off the scabs of all the racial wounds."

He spoke as the NAACP gathered for its annual meeting in New York, where it was founded a century ago.

NAACP officials said that if the Post does not take "serious disciplinary action," they would reach out to organizations across the country to join them in their efforts against the tabloid.

NAACP Chairman Julian Bond called the publication of the cartoon "thoughtlessness taken to the extreme. ... Anyone who is not offended by it does not have any sensitivity."

The NY Post(owned by News corp, owned by Rupert Murdoch who owns FOX news who is extremely right wing and racist as well) is now trying to say this was not meant to be about Obama and was not intended to be racist. That is laughable and as Julian Bond says anyone not offended by this has zero sensitivity on such things.
Yes they have a free right speech to print such, but the public has the same right to boycott them and demand firings for printing it.And all people of all races should be offended and demand such IMO.

Could it be construed as racist? Yes.

Could it be construed as an invitation to ********? yes.

Even without these underlying themes, is it essentially offensive? yes.

Should it be removed and the editor fired? No.

It's free speech, if you don't like it you can move to Iran and join those people that think people shouldn't be able to print offensive cartoons either.

Justified or not, worse things were said about Bush and there was no massive public outcry by his supports to censure it. I call that a double standard.

Conspiracy...
Where did they name anyone?

Maybe, the cartoonist is calling everyone in Congress or Washington monkeys.

This is freedom of speech. :hatsoff:

Whoever thought that was a good idea should lose their job. An editors job is to keep crap like that off the paper. They could have printed a full frontal and gotten less outrage.

I love it that there are a bunch of self-appointed guardians of Obama. Like he needs the NAACP or worse yet sack of **** Sharpton to take care of him.

Yep there's a freedom of speech issue in here...it is art after all. Even though he's not the one who wrote that "stimulus" bill. I do think that the wrong person or people might take it as a call to do something violent to Obama and that's where I think they went to far.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and their ilk, are always finding something to be offended at, because that's how they make money. Post stop giving clowns attentions.

New Corp is very right wing, but I'm not sure they're racist.

Really? Too far?
Since there are 2 cops and a dead chimp...why does that seem so familiar? Oh, yeah, cops had to shoot a chimp a few days before and it was all over the news...and they are referring to the writing of the StealfromUs Bill, written by Dem Senators, basically a Democratic Wish list from the past many years. and padded at final draft by Nancy and her closest cronies.
How can a rational person go from a dominant Dem congress being compared to a chimpanzee to "**** Obama!"?
Like any potential assassins don't already have their bags packed and weapons loaded...since last year...
I guess the key word here is rational. Not a word used to describe Sharpton or the NAACP (National Assoc for the Advancement of Clowns and Politicians).
Free (and Funny) Speech : 1, Race whores : 0.

Surely does remind me of the mindset behind the Danish Cartoon Riots.

I can imagine the lame-brained cartoonist just LOVES to make cartoons like this, where he has an "out" - it's about how a monkey could've written it! - but he knows that most people will connect our black president - the primary person behind the stimulus bill - to a chimp, an old racist comparison (blacks are less mentally developed than humans are, just like apes!), and he's hoping to satisfy the racists and anger the anti-racists, and get off scot-free as some noble crusader for free speech, which he likely doesn't give a **** about unless he's the one whose speech is being threatened. A newspaper is not obligated to employ such a pathetic excuse for a cartoonist, though.

In any event, even if one takes the most benign interpretation of the cartoon possible, it's not funny, probably a good bit less funny than your average Hi and Lois or whatever...

Your usual extreme contrary diatribe is as usual way off the point.
Only the extreme left leaning unfunny types could miss the obvious intent of the cartoon...it's a good and funny political cartoon, and your take on the Black mentality is very telling.
Without a doubt many Black people got it...I know a few who liked the sentiment expressed.

When do the endless links from radical lefties and Black Activists get posted?

Murdoch sorry for NY Post cartoon seen as racist.

New York Post Chairman Rupert Murdoch apologized Tuesday for a cartoon that critics said likened a violent chimpanzee shot dead by police to President Barack Obama.

In a statement published in the newspaper, Murdoch said he wanted to "personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted." He said the Post will work to be more sensitive.

Murdoch said the cartoon was intended only to "mock a badly written piece of legislation."

:weeping:

Murdoch probably gave the cartoonist the original idea in the first place. The overall message is to supplant the racist image of the monkey, not to make a satirical statement about the legislation. Given NYC's recent history of police officers ******* unarmed african-american citizens in cold *****, I wonder why there weren't more bullet holes in the victim and why the cartoonist didn't try to make the racist overtone even more obvious....

I can almost, kind of, sort of, maybe, in a way, understand why black people would be offended by this, but it's all stupid.

The part about this "story" I **** the most is how the NAACP claims that it is a BLACK monkey. Umm, it's a black and white cartoon?

Here Zombie, Zombie, Zombie...
Granted it was in bad taste and should not have been printed. But damn people, relax. Someone will get their hand slapped or fired. The general public doesn't need to shove their balls into the mix.

The point of the editors.. quality assurance guys and the rest.. not to restrict free speech so much as to avoid things like this. Complaining about Obama - OKAY. Saying the stimulus bill is written by a bunch of tard monkeys - OKAY. Hinting that the Obamessiah is a primate? Oversensitive black focus groups will WHINE about it.

Nothing will happen. A fake apology might be released. A fake acceptance will retort with a few jabs at the editors. A president will keep presiding. Same ****, different day. Didja hear Imus called a black basketball player a nappy headed ho last year? OOH! That's some racially charged... oh wait, no it's not. Carry on.
