Not really a mess up fetish. Long time ago many people paid painters to paint nude woman and other images for their "personal" collection. Hentai is just taking the whole anime style to a new level.

Hentai (this goes for non hentai-manga/anime as well) is usually very stylistic with characters (and situations!) that have exaggerated features. The one problem is that hentai (again, non-hentai manga/anime too) is such a large part of the culture it comes from that its like pop music: so flooded with garbage its near impossible to sort through to find what's good from what's ****. I like it because when its good, it can be really impressive artwork, usually with some kind of off-beat *nyuck nyuck* anime-like absurd storyline with equal parts laughs as much as sex and the rest.
