I was thinking about just that very point this morning. What is it that defines Americans now? And I don't mean from an international perspective. How do we, as Americans, define ourselves? What is left that can be claimed as distinctly "American?" I had a hard time coming up with an real list of serious length.
Also, I came to the conclusion that the term "assimilation," in America, has nothing to do with people moving here from other places and assimilating to American culture anymore (probably because there really isn't an American "culture" anymore). Assimilation in America, these days, involves Americans being made to assimilate to every other culture throughout the world in an attempt to not piss off, or upset those that move to this country from somewhere else.
IMO its disappointing that we as Americans have given up our sense of culture to accommodate people from other cultures who refused to immerse themselves in ours, and call us insensitive or intolerant for not understanding or being accepting of their culture.
