The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I know this seems like a really pointless thread, but I'm actually trying to get some true and honest feedback by posting this. I'm not currently in a band, as I have dedicated my life to cooking for the past number of years and need some time to get back into the swing of things (musically), but I plan on starting one in the near future.

I have over 30 songs already written and another 10 or 20 that are, well, let's say "in the process" of being written. I want to know what you think is the most important element to a song in order for you to truly enjoy listening to it.

Is it the music itself?
Is it the lyrics?
Is it the person/band who performs the music?
Is it some combination of the three?

:dunno:

For example...

If a song has really good music but really bad lyrics, would you still like it? Can the melody make you completely not care about how terrible and meaningless the lyrics are?

Vice versa...if the song had really bad music but really good lyrics, would you still like it? Can you enjoy a song that has really amazing lyrics, but has a melody that could be written by a 9 year old?

Do you tend to like songs better just because they are performed by a certain artist or band?

I would say a combination of the 3. 1 and 2 are the most important and I suppose number 3 comes into it because we all have favourite musicians and alot of people follow trends.

I also belive its the type of music you listen to, I mean if your a dance music person then lyrics are unimportant, music is the main thing.

If your into rock etc then lyrics and music are important.

If your into hip hop/rap I suppose lyrics are the mst important (although popular hip hop does not seem to follow this rule.)

I would have to pick "Is it the person/band who performs the music?"

But all three is a good pick too.And when I say the person band its not how they look or something but there ability to give life to and make almost any lyrics/ song sound good.I really am thinking of the Beatles here I guess who could take almost any old song and rock it out.Not many bands/ people have that ability and musical chops as they say.

The music is what catches my ear first. Lyrics must "fit" the music for me to delve into the song's meaning or message. :2 cents:

Who it is can be impressive or disappointing.

I said "comination of three". However, number 3 (the person/band) is something that SHOULD could naturally. Music and lyrics you need to try hard to make great (unless you are a musical prodigy) but if the personality of the band or artist doesn't just appear naturally, then you won't make it anywhere.

Combo of 3, but what's the point?

For me it has to be music that is more important than anything else. After all to me it is the music that catches your attention more than lyrics. Lyrics to me are like a bonus item for the ingredients to a song [they are not a must]. I listen to Metal bands with good lyrics and also Metal bands with lyrics that are considered by some to be a joke [Manowar, Majesty, etc]. They can sing and wail about warriors fighting dragons or politics or death or whatever, as long as the music is good I dont give a fuck what the lyrics are about. Riffs melodies and solos they are all I care about.

what the fuck you lookin at?
I'd say a combination of the first 2. The music and lyrics have got to match up or the song sucks...thats how we ended up with rap...

For me, the most important is both the music and lyrics.

The music.

Good lyrics are a plus, but they're generally secondary to the music.

Band/Performer: The ones I like aren't guaranteed to hit a home run every time. By the same token bands/performers I dislike will occasionally surprise me with a gem amid the trash.

For me it is the music. Being a Jazz buff, I like extended solo's particulary the Trumpet, Guitar and/or Piano/Organ.

for me the music and lyric's is what ifind most fasanating i guess. if you know the poeple behind them too well sometimes what they do may let you down. but the music is alway's thier for you too use it in any way you want too.

sometimes i listen to a song, and the lyrics/singers voice are terrible and the music is great, but sometimes i listen to a song and it is the complete opposite, the music is shit, but the lyrics/singers voice is great

I voted for the music. My favorite music is mostly instrumental, or very long songs with long instrumental breaks. I find myself thinking, this song would be so much better if there were no one singing, but rarely do I find the music to be a detriment to the quality. As far as who does the song, as long as it's a good song I'll listen to it, the person may only have one good song in my opinion, so I'll only catch it on the radio, but I won't not listen to something because others think it's weird, or they suck.

It's a combination of the three, and a great song can fall flat with the wrong arrangement or the wrong performer. A really bad or stupid song can be a big hit with the right performance.

I personally really love to hear a great storyteller perform.

The music. I'm like Wagner: to me, a singer's voice is just another voice in the orchestra, another timbre added to the mix and doesn't need to make any sense to be pleasing or displeasing as long as the melodic lines it makes are good.

I guess number 3. Gwen Stefani's solo album outselling every No Doubt record proves that people don't care about music or lyrics.
