Muhammad Ali is 70 today

He chose not to fight in Vietnam, which is a war the US didn't win, so he made a pretty good call all things considered.

I'm fairly certain he could beat the living hell out of anyone talking shit about him now on the internet, if he wasn't disabled at the moment.

And there in lies the debate. He chose not to fight for his country, yet chose to fight individual boxers because it would make him wealthy. What it really comes down to is, he had no problem beating someone senseless in the name of Allah. But, he chose not to support his country in the name of Allah.

Joe Louis was probably one of the best, if not the best fighter in the history of boxing. He was drafted and he fulfilled his duty. The Army decided he would be better off doing exhibition fights for the troops, PR work, etc. He was still in the Army, but was used for a better purpose. Ali would have certainly been givin the same treatment. Troop moral. No way would he have been plunked down in a rice paddy with regular guys.

Fact is, he enjoyed reaping all the benefits that the country offered, yet he didn't want to pay back his gratitude by serving his county.

Fuck the fuckin' fucker!

The phrase, "Fucking up a free lunch" comes to mind as I read these posts. "Ungracious Morons" is also flitting by on the bottom of my internal sports ticker.

The one and only.
Truly the Greatest of All-Time. For anyone who's interested, the biography written by Thomas Hauser is an excellent read. Ali was so much more than just an athlete, he was a man who transcended the sporting world to become an icon and symbol for an entire generation. There will never be another man like him. Happy birthday, Champ.

When I watched this live in 1996, it brought tears to my eyes, and it still does now.

Pick it up about 5:40 to catch Ali, or watch it all the way through to get the full effect.

I served in the military and I agree completely with Sam Fisher on this one. Ali was a great boxer, but he was also a draft dodger.

By the way, the best boxer of all time was Rocky Marciano.

He was smart enough to see and stand up to his decision NOT to fight in a fabricated war. Check this before going on with your b/s:

I am sure you would have been proud to have served in the Iraq war, too? Another war based on lies?

But boy, shoveling your hate into the Birthday Thread for the undisputed greatest boxer of all time...

Still too afraid to take him on. As many other people should be.

Lol so suddenly he doesn't deserve respect because he didn't want to fight a senseless war? GTFO with that patriotic BS.

Beyond the classless display of some members on a birthday thread, they also are too dense to know that a draftee military is a self-defeating prophecy. Sam, you did 3 measley years on one ship? I did 8 years in 6 countries. I don't want anyone in my formation that doesn't want to be there.
