The problem with saying that vitamins are useless is that it's assumed that all the people who take vitamins also eat a healthy, balanced diet. Sure, if you eat right, you are very likely already getting what you need, but not everyone does. I hardly ever eat veggies or fruit these days, at least not enough to qualify toward a balanced diet. If all I eat in an entire day is a serving of spaghetti and a snack of yogurt, I am very obviously not getting all the nutrients that I need.

One of the issues I see with many vitamins is that they put far too much in them. You do not need 1000 mg of vitamin C, as the average person only needs between 65 and 90 mg per day. Perhaps if companies would stop using mega doses for their supplements, there wouldn't be so much of an issue with negative health issues down the road from overdosing on vitamins.

People decry regulation but it does provide some protections against greedy companies

Actually our farming soil is depleated of nutrients so our food has less nutrients in it than say back in the 50s- farming is done to get high yields not necessarily nutrient dense food.
Mcdonalds and fast food has a profound effect on farming methods to produce enough cheaply

actually some sources say you should get way over the usrda of many vitamins- vit c is around 10,000 not the low usrda. (many registered dieticians would disagree)

I always wonder if they put saw dust in capsules

I know what I did in the printing industry to get the job done and keep the boss happy- not always proud of it but you need the pay check coming in regular.

If a pill is too big to swallow, I chew some food then put the pill inside the chewed food and it goes down smooth.
 
The reason they dose vitamins so high is to ensure the body absorbs some of it. The human body stores very few of the vitamins and minerals it needs. Vitamin D for example is stored in fat. Ideally, one should get their vitamins from food and use supplements as a supplement not the primary source.
