Most Overused Expressions Of 2020

Nattering Nabob of Negativism
I'm conflicted about this. On one hand I can see some people potentially reading too much into some innocent offhand comment of the past. On the other hand I long ago got tired of "It was just a joke", "I was just joking", or "Can't you take a joke" being used as an catch-all get out of jail free excuse for any reprehensible or stupid thoughts and actions somebody did that they now want to worm their way out of.
Fair enough. I was thinking more along the lines of this: https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-brie...rprises-ceasing-publication-of-six-books-over

I have a friend who is an IRS Agent. He hates when I start sentences with, “Greg, hypothetically speaking...”
In my experiences the term "hypothetically speaking" is the very close sibling to the term, "Asking for a friend". The person might as well be winking when they tell you that.

Probably only for those in the UK, but. "Protect the NHS".

If you ask nicely, I could go on a nice rant about why. :)

For over a year now, we've been told not to visit our GP's or go to the hospital unless it's absolutely necessary. People have been doing that and when they finally do go, are told they should have come in sooner.
You follow their advice and get a telling off for following their advice?

Cancer patients in the UK are dying due to late diagnosis and routine appointments being cancelled. Patients with long term, serious, life threatening conditions who are supposed to see their GP once a month, haven't seen or spoken to one for a year. My mother and one of her friends being examples of both cases (cancer and long term illness).

Now I know that could all be dismissed as the NHS shifting people around to help with Covid. But, There are only so many Nurses and Dr's who are trained in ICU medicine, and only so many that can physically be in any Covid ward at any one time.

There are entire departments in the Scottish NHS where the staff have nothing to do. These are specialised departments where the staff have no ICU training, so they're not being used to look after Covid patients. This isn't a wild conspiracy theory, this is straight from a nurse.

I myself had an appointment for a minor issue rescheduled four times (I fully expected it and it didn't affect my life in any way). When I did finally get to visit the hospital, I was less than impressed. Easily 90% of the nurses in the department were in no way physically capable of working in a busy Covid ward. I was left wondering just what the hell they'd been doing for the past year as the appointments were continuously being rescheduled.

Here's one I think all Americans will appreciate.
To handle the vaccination rollout, volunteers have been trained in how to give the jab. But they aren't being used. Dr's are being paid extra per vaccination. Guess who's doing the work in some areas? The caring profession making extra money from "caring". I have no objection to someone earning money, but don't then turn around and tell me I have to protect you, so you don't get burned out while you're out doing extra work that others are capable of doing while you rest.

There has also been a explosion in "Television Dr's". Hard working GP's who spend half the day on TV or on the radio. One was sort of called out on it earlier today on live TV. I say sort of because I only really caught the tail end of it. I'll know 100% when I can see it on catch up.

I know there are a lot of Dr's, Nurses, Porters and Cleaners working their backsides off in the Covid wards. But they are only part of the NHS and it's a joke to treat the entirety of the NHS as a haven full of heroes and heroines.

There you go, one only slightly incoherent rant that I hope doesn't sound too much like something a certain not so "perfect" mister would have posted. I don't expect many to agree, but there it is.

I've had several appointments with GPs since last March and this hasn't been my experience. Examples please.

I don't see how this is the fault of the NHS. This is the fault of the government's pathetic mishandling of this whole pandemic. As such, NHS gets overworked and cases such as your mother's sadly happen.
Now I know that could all be dismissed as the NHS shifting people around to help with Covid. But, There are only so many Nurses and Dr's who are trained in ICU medicine, and only so many that can physically be in any Covid ward at any one time.
Again, not the NHS's fault.

Sources?

What does this even mean?

Again, where are your sources that volunteers aren't being used? The rollout is ahead of schedule and we have the fastest vaccination rate in Europe. My understanding is that GPs are not replacing their surgeries but taking extra shifts so they can help with vaccination rates.
There has also been a explosion in "Television Dr's". Hard working GP's who spend half the day on TV or on the radio. One was sort of called out on it earlier today on live TV. I say sort of because I only really caught the tail end of it. I'll know 100% when I can see it on catch up.
This is, to be blunt, bullshit.

Of course you're seeing more doctors on the TV - we're in a pandemic and their advice and opinions are being sought out more. That's like wondering why there are more footballers on the TV during the World Cup.
I know there are a lot of Dr's, Nurses, Porters and Cleaners working their backsides off in the Covid wards. But they are only part of the NHS and it's a joke to treat the entirety of the NHS as a haven full of heroes and heroines.
I don't even know where to start on this.

You were right, I didn't.

In fact, I'm puzzled by your entire rant and what it actually has to do with 'Protect The NHS'. This is a pandemic. The NHS is going to be busier than usual. We absolutely should be protecting it by social distancing, wearing masks, getting the vaccine, and staying at home where possible. I just can't fathom why anyone would have a problem with this concept.

Of course, it's a slogan used repeatedly by a government that, for the most part, couldn't have done less to protect the NHS, but maybe that's best left for the politics forum.
