MLB 2009 thread

I think the title says it all.

Me, I'm not making any predictions...just going to enjoy another season of Brewers baseball.

i tried to stay on top the diamondbacks. but with my schedule it was impossible. without cable, i wonder if ill even get games this time around.

I'm currently in the process of getting together some stats for all the teams, I hope that in the next week or so to writeup a mini prediction of all the teams. We'll see how that goes :D

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I don't have really high hopes for my White Sox. They got rid of some key players and are already talking about trading Jermaine Dye for someone "younger". I don't think they'll have a bad year, but I don't think they'll win more than 70 or 80 games. That's probably not going to put them in the playoffs, considering the division they're in.

there's the cubs? i like the cubs much better than the sox. as a matter of fact, i never could stand the american league.

As a Pirate fan I know 2009 will simply be another year of agony :(

On the other hand the Dodgers, my adopted team, opened the year by releasing that no-work-ethic piece of shit beached whale Andruw Jones, so they're already way ahead of the game in my book :)

Let me start out by saying I'm a die hard twins fan. I can't remember the 1991 World Series and I wasn't alive in 1987. I'm really wondering how the Tigers are going to hold up this year. Good luck to the White Sox, hope it's another close race.

I already got most of my games mapped out. I'm moving to California this summer and I'm going to see the Angels vs the Twins. They play on July 24th-26th. I can't wait to move down to California.

although not a mets fan i will be interrested to see how they respond to a second september collapse. yes the bullpen moves are great

AL east should be damn interesting, with all of the good teams in it I would be surprised if any team in it gets more than 92 or so wins. So here are my top 3 AL east standings:

1.) Red Sox - The team has great chemistry and most of the injuries should be dealt with by the start of the season.

2.) Yankees - Buying good players does not get you a championship automatically and I think it will take a while for all of the players to mesh. If they do mesh right away they will probably win the division though.

3.) Rays - I honestly can't see them repeating what they did last year, they will still be competitive, but not first.

Other predictions
Central:
White Sox - They are in a pretty easy division, I would be surprised if they didn't win. Cleveland could give them a run for their money, but only if Lee is as good as last year. We'll also have to wait and see if Detroit will bounce back from their terrible season last year, they could be a big threat.

West:
Angels - After a season like last year it is very hard to vote against them, I doubt they will get another 100 win season, but who knows, their division isn't the greatest. Their biggest threat will be Oakland since they have some very good pitchers and just added Holliday and might add Giambi as a big bat.

NL

East:
Mets - They fixed their hole in the reliever spot by adding Rodriguez so they should have a much improved record come season's end. The Phillies will be a very tough competitor for them, but I think they will take the division.

Central:
Cubs - They must be pretty mad after the way last season came to an end and have something to prove. They easily won the division last year and I expect them to repeat with a similar record. I predict that Milwaukee will miss the playoffs this year since NL East will be so much stronger and eat up the playoff spot.

West:
I can't really call the NL west just yet I would say the Dodgers, but they have to sign Manny back to be a serious competitor I think.

The my football season ends simultanious to the Giants season, i can't wait for baseball season to begin. Baseball should be year around.

Anyways, I'm being bias. The Yankees spent a lot of money and they have improved tremendously. They'll be pumped up in a new stadium and they will be playing with a chip on their should for not making the playoff last season.

Yankees all the way!

hmm yankees have issues at 2nd base and centerfield plus no obvious use for nick swisher except as trade bait plus there is no prof that posada's shoulder is 100%. the whitesox will not win the central. the a's will challenge the angels. nl easy goes through philly till the mets man up, the central should be a cubs haven but watch out for st.louis, the west will be the diamondbacks or the giants

New MLB rules cause maple bat flap

Looks like the bat problem's going to get worse before it gets better I'm afraid.

MLB and the players’ association plan to meet with manufacturers again during spring training. Next on the agenda is studying the different drying methods used and how bat shapes affect breaks. The manufacturer believes certain standards for bat geometry – smaller length-to-weight ratios for bats with larger barrels and thinner handles, for example – is likelier to curb breakage than slope-of-grain policing.

I would have thought that the ratio aspect would have been the first thing they looked into. :dunno:
