I mean if you've spent 5 years at one site and you decide to part ways and the site gets to keep the name then you've essentially got to start over. They've got to remember that their name is their brand so protect it and make it a good one.

That's pretty much it. The only name you own is your birth name. If you go by a stage name then you need to pay for the trademark so no one else gets to use it. If you let it expire then it's fair game. Or if you own the trademarked name still you can sell it to someone else.
