Lesbian parents have happy, successful kids

Seems like the "kids need a mother and a father" argument against gay parenting is proven wrong :

Adolescents with Lesbian Mothers Describe Their Own Lives

Teens with lesbian mothers are academically successful and happy with their lives. The 17-year-olds participating in the longest-running study of lesbian families had high school GPAs in the A- to B+ range, and nearly all planned to attend four-year colleges. These adolescents had strong family bonds, and they were nearly unanimous in describing their mothers as good role models. They also reported having numerous close friends—generally with same-age peers who were predominantly heterosexual. Most of the teens felt comfortable bringing friends home, informing friends about their mothers’ lesbianism and confiding in their mothers.

The teenagers were asked a series of questions about their everyday life experiences including academics, extracurricular activities, aspirations, friendships, family interactions, role models, health problems and wellbeing. Notably, almost all of the 78 adolescents described their mothers as good role models. Prior studies on the same group of teenagers found that they demonstrated more competencies and fewer behavioral problems than an age-matched normative sample of American youth; although some adolescents with lesbian mothers had experienced homophobic stigmatization, family closeness helped counteract its negative effects.

The 78 adolescents in the current report were drawn from families that are participating in the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), the longest-running and largest prospective investigation of lesbian mothers and their children in the United States. Initiated by Dr. Gartrell in 1986, the NLLFS examines the social, psychological and emotional development of the children as well as the dynamics of planned lesbian families.

The current study appears in the current issue of the Journal of Homosexuality.

It's a pro-Lesbian study by Lesbians to promote the idea of Lesbians adopting babies and having families. There's nothing wrong with Lesbian families persay, but studies like that are always going to push whatever viewpoint is held by those who run or fund them regardless of whatever the actual data or anyone else says in another study. For every one of these, you can find an opposing study contradicting it in some way.

Bring a anti-lesbian study and we'll talk but for now, you've bring nothing to the debate but ideology...

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
They probably do, and so do kids of 2 dad families. I doubt the sex of the parents are what make happiness, happy parents, and a functional family unit, make good parents. I personally have seen families destroyed because the man was living a lie, to conform to society, and the religious family upbringing he had, while living a secret life behind his wifes back.

I'm not bringing any ideology to the conversation and I am for Gay marriage and families as long as both individuals are responsible and productive members of society, but since you asked, go look up Dr. Mark Regnerus. He put out a study a few months ago in direct opposition to the viewpoint of the one you brought up. This study is a pro-LGBQT bit done completely by LGBQT researchers that claims same-sex families are superior to male-female families and it panders to the LGBQT folk who genuninely do believe that they are superior to those who are not. I live in the Washington DC area - which has a large LGBQT community - and I encounter many LGBQT folk who promote that belief and anytime there is a conversation about same-sex marriage, same-sex relationships, or anyone who is LGBQT, they often make statements that imply if not outright clearly state LGBQT superiority over heterosexuals and it only damages any case for equality that they make. Accepting this study as defacto truth is like accepting a study of Alocoholics financed by the Liquor industry that states Alcoholics are in fact - contrary to popular belief - less likely to have failed relationships and broken families than people who don't drink on a regular basis when history and what we see with our own eyes tells us otherwise.

It is probably politically incorret to say that it is better that the child has a mother and father.

But that's just my opinion.

To an extent I'd agree with you. Speaking from a male point of view there's just some things you can't come to a woman for advice as they've got no real experience with it. With that said though I don't see a problem as long as there's some other male the kid can interact with i.e. Grandpa, Uncle, Older Cousin.

To be fair, most butch lesbians have bigger balls than a lot of guys nowadays.

Fair point.

However, a child having two active, involved parents is such a good thing for any child. The point about having both male and female role models is also important. In my experience, gay parents are at least as likely, if not more likely to be part of a larger community that includes close friends of both genders. That type of community is invaluable to raising children.

On a side, moderately related note, another place I have witnessed community of that sort is in active Christian families. They're part of a congregation, and a larger community. They're more likely to have multiple male and female role models involved in their children's lives.

:2 cents:

I think people should be more concerned with family units that consist of deadbeat dads, abusive parents, adulterous marriages, absentee workaholic parents etc rather than worry about there being two loving lesbian moms or two gay dads. A healthy, stable home is just that - regardless of the gender of parents. Love is love, regardless if it comes from two moms, two dads, a mom and a dad, grandparents who are raising their grandkids, etc. People need to stop bickering about other peoples family units and focus more on making their own the best it can be. If its already perfect, then spend time or donate to single mothers who are struggling.

You have to look no farther than the happiest child of a lesbian of them all, Rosie O’Donnell’s daughter. That house is like the Cleavers of carpet munchers.
