Lawmakers urge civilians to arm themselves

It'll be a way to put fear in people who might try abducting someone if they think they might get shot.

Yeah most are I think but not everyone and thats making for an "arms" gap.:violent:

a fascinating development. i doubt roving militia would be able to do much about the car/truck bombs, but i have read somewhere that great numbers of dead bodies are found abandoned all over baghdad, every day, victims of murder and worse. this could help against that.

when iraq's own "prominent politicians" throw up their hands and say "do it yourself", maybe the u.s. should follow their example.
:2 cents:

Think about it from the point of view of the people that have to live with that. If you were in their position would you want to rely on the government and police or the US army to protect you when they have been failing miserably or would you want to do all you can to insure the safety of your family and yourself as much as possible. If I saw an inevitable civil war coming, despite efforts to stop it, I sure wouldn’t want to be the one left helpless. Even in this country I don’t want to have to rely on the police or trust my government enough with my safety. It’s not like the insurgents are really going to care one way or another if the government tells them something unlike some of the regular people.

Well then I guess the so-called govt in Iraq is a totally inefective inconsquential fraud and Ameican policy of standing up a govt there is a total failure. So we are there why?

increasing arms has never made any society safer, it just ensures that the one's that want to do bad things with guns will have easier access to getting them. for all the hooplaw we make about "if guns were outlawed, only criminals would have guns." you usually don't hear the less popular statement "criminals are just going to wait till you aren't home, break into your house, and steal your guns to commit crimes with." or just be alot more likely to shoot you without warning out of fear that you might resist and be carrying a weapon.

maybe I just really am a cynic because as much as I support self-armining (and believe it or not I really do, compared to the alternative) and I don't trust the government and the cops, I don't really trust the stupid populace to be responsible either.

Calpoon I agree with you 100%,my point here was that this was a sign that contrary to the propaganda we here about progress in Iraq it is getting more violent all the time.We displaced a power structure there(Saddam)bad as it was and have gotten anarchy to replace it.I also beleive in the 2nd amendment right to bear arms.No it does not make america safer from bad people with guns,as you say legal guns become illegal ones many times.A bigger supply of legal ones means a bigger supply of illegal ones. But the reason the founding fathers wanted population armed was so that the people had power to resist a govt who tried to do the kinds of things the King of England had done.Yes the founding fathers envisioned armed revolt sometime again in the future and that was the basis for the right.

Well..it's often stated that, in the secure society, either everybody has guns or nobody has guns. Personally, I'm not sure how much good this will do, but I can understand the populace's frustration and desire to personally fight back against the insurgency.
