James Garner Passes Away

Article here : http://www.cbsnews.com/news/james-garner-tv-and-movie-legend-dead-at-86/

One of my favorite actors The Great Escape, Rockford Files, Tank, Murphy's Romance, Space Cowboys, and many others. An actor I enjoyed in virtually all of his roles.

James Garner - fantastic versataile actor
A lot of people all over the world recognise him as Jim Rockford in "The Rockford Files" (Epic series at the time and the theme music - divine)
He was also in "Maverick"

Trying to remember and anyone can correct me if I am wrong , but was there a Western themed film starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster about a group of people going to a big gambling festival on one of those river hotel ships where James Garner played a role?

The movie you're thinking of is Maverick, inspired by the show on which Garner starred long ago. And in the movie, it turns out he is a Maverick, the father.

Also, he was in Support Your Local Sheriff!, and Support Your Local Gunfighter. The former of which was better than the latter, but both are good movies.

I didn't know his acting too well, but he was in one of my favorite movies called My Fellow Americans with the late Jack Lemmon.

R.I.P. Mr. Garner

I thought he was already dead. The Great Escape and Victor Victoria are 2 of my favorite movies but Maverick is my hero. Find a card game, get into trouble, escape with a few bucks and your life, move onto the next town. Monmouth Park chalk took my money yesterday. If I don't get revenge this afternoon then south to AC in the spirit of Maverick. If I do get revenge then it's still south in the spirit of the old man. I'll take the back way to the new Sonic before hopping onto the Parkway (YumYum.) Sundays are always best since I'll be heading in the opposite direction of those shore backups.

James Garner also stared in “The Americanization of Emily”a comedy drama World War II film by Paddy Chavefsky staring a rather young hot looking Julie Andrews. Lieutenant commander Charlie Madison played by Garner, a United States Naval Reserve officer is a cynical and highly efficient adjutant to Rear Admiral William Jessup played by Melvyn Douglas in 1944 London. Madison's job as a dog robber is to keep his boss and other high-ranking officers supplied with luxury goods and fuckable women. He falls in love with a driver from the motor pool, Emily Barham played by Julie Andrews, who has lost her husband, brother, and father in the war. Madison's sybaritic (pleasure-seeking), "American" lifestyle amid wartime rationing both fascinates and disgusts Emily, but she does not want to lose another loved one to war and finds the "practicing coward" Madison irresistible.

Both Garner and Andrews considered this film to be their personal favorite.

R.I.P. James Garner

Very sad news indeed. The Rockford Files is one of the greatest TV series in the history of the medium. I loved Jim's sequences with Angel Martin (played by Stuart Margolin).

I'm sure that now he's living in his trailer on that big beach in the sky.

R.I.P. Jim....you will be missed. :crying:

And for race fans he was the star of Grand Prix.

Many years ago, back when the channel was still young & fresh (before its death/Fox buyout and Speed Channel renaming), Speedvision presented a wonderful showing of Grand Prix on Thanksgiving day. The hosts for that show were James Garner and Jacques Villeneuve. During the intermissions, Jacques spoke about being a modern grand prix driver and being the son of legendary F1 hero, Gilles Villeneuve, while James Garner spoke about his professional racing ambitions and the adventures involved in making the iconic movie Grand Prix. Many people don't realize just how talented Garner was as a driver. But much like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, he had to make a choice and he chose acting (although he still did some driving and was a pal of Jackie Stewart and David Hobbs). Can any true race fans imagine how amazing it would have been if Garner, Newman and McQueen could have gotten together to do Le Mans or the 24 Hours of Daytona???

From watching The Rockford Files in my youth to seeing Grand Prix and the making of it, James Garner was something of a hero of mine. One of the last times I was at VA Intl. Raceway, they did a special showing of Grand Prix on an outside screen. It was like a drive-in experience. And it was interesting how many people were crying during and after the film - it was like a religious experience. Now, his passing makes me think a bit about my own mortality.

So long James Garner. May you be resting in peace. And if I make the trip, maybe you'll sign an autograph for me and let me sit beside you as we watch Ayrton Senna, Gilles Villeneuve and the other legendary greats race in Heaven.

Here's a nice, motorsports themed article about the life and passing of Garner.

“Grand Prix” star James Garner dies age 86

I grew up watching Rockford Files and loved it. 60 minutes of pure entertainment. From all you hear one of the all-time coolest guys EVER

Told my Mom this happened and she was sad to hear it and said in his days he was REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY good looking.

I'm sad to see him go. I loved him in "My Fellow Americans" (1996)

If this were a just world, that movie would have the same following, 30 years after release, that we see from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Blazing Saddles. It deserves to be viewed as a comedy classic.

Good riddance.

I'm kidding. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of watching Rockford with my Dad. The first time he let me have a sip of beer was during that program. His longtime relationship with Mariette Hartley was my introduction to the concept of living in sin. Well done.

So long James Garner, we hardly knew ye.

Rockford Files was the one of first prime dramas I remember as a kid. Better than anything broadcast today on all types of prime time BS in the modern times.

RIP James!

James Garner & Lois Clarke, married 1956 to present. In a town and industry where the average marriage expires before the milk in the refrigerator, this is amazing.

James Garner with Jacques Villeneuve. Not the clip I was looking for, but still good.
