Yes, the correct side. That's why I said "especially knowing what you know now". I understand that the war wasn't purely about slavery (by a long shot). But anybody who even now thinks that the south was in the right is a fool. Back then, people weren't educated. Lots of them fought for the south because that's where they were born, and they didn't know any other way of life. They were born into lives where their families owned, bought and sold slaves. They hadn't ever felt what it was like to be owned and had no reason to imagine it. Today, (most) people are educated (not necessarily smart). They know that all men are created equal, and that no one should literally belong to another person. Is it right for a modern day German to say "Yes, I'd have fought alongside Hitler to exterminate the Jews, but at the end of day we'd all shake hands and everything would be fine?" No. When basic human rights are in question, there are two sides: Right and Wrong. Other things are obviously in play in any conflict, but to ignore one side's policy of genocide, slavery or any other human atrocity because you think they're right about other stuff is inexcusable in my view.

But the title of your thread doesn't address State's Rights. It addresses Liberals. You keep going on and on about these things, but you have yet to make a consistent point. According to you Liberals don't want State's Rights, yet when they exercise them you're pissed about it, you're pissed about the Governor of Massachusetts exercising his state's rights, but you're all for State's Rights, but not when California exercises theirs, but let's not be fooled, Sammy is all for State's Rights.

I don't see what that has to do with anything. The discussion was about the American Civil War and why it was fought. Slavery is not okay anywhere, or at any point in time, but we were talking about the figurehead of the pro-slavery side in the Civil War.

If we're going to eliminate all figureheads that had anything to do with slavery, let's abolish the entire Roman Empire from history. Greek Empire, Persian Empire, any and all Indian tribes (and those who led them) who took slaves, should all be stripped of mention. Let's disavow the existence of the Aztecs and Incas because they had slaves and practiced human sacrifice.

It's evolution. You don't learn anything unless you learn from something. Colonial America merely used the same economic model that had been used everywhere else since the beginning of "civilization".

Once again, we were discussing the American Civil War. I understand that slavery has happened all over the world throughout the ages. No where in my statements did I give any of the people in the slave trade throughout the ages a free pass. To your other point, no one's trying to ignore the existence of any of those people. They're not going to be erased from the history books by any stretch of the imagination. Taking a name of the man who led the south in their efforts to maintain their slaves and secede from the rest of the country off a public park will do neither of those things.
