Is Yawning Contagious? If So, Why?

Why when somebody yawns do I and other people also yawn? Is the sight of someone yawning suggestive to our brains or is there something gassy secreted from the mouth that gets into our system causing us to yawn?

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
It does seem to be. Even after a good nights sleep, If I see my wife yawn, I'll do the same. Maybe it has scientific reality...so what was the result on Myth Busters? Or did you just kind of loose yourself in some weird fantasy that involved Kari?

it is all psychological. Physiologically speaking a yawn is the body's urge to expel excessive carbon monoxide from its lungs, so it takes a big breath to help exchange the air. when you get tired your breath per minute rate slows and that's why you have a tendency of yawning when you get tired
