Is it just as much a crime?

I was watching TV "Clean Sweep" this morning *waits for the laughter of members to subside* and while watching the yard sale portion of the show some questions popped into my head. Is "shoplifting " at a yard sale as much a crime as any other shoplifting? Could someone be arrested for it?

I remember at a community fire house sale once someone jumped on a bike and took off with it after being dropped off from a car. The guy was a young boy, we had wondered if a 'parent' had been the one that dropped him off. I remember my *** (she had a yard sale every Spring) telling me "Look at that woman, she just put that in her bag." while I was helping her at her sale. I of course replied for her to let it go, "its a 25 cent item ma" no need to say a thing I felt. Later discussing it, we all wondered why someone would bother stealing junk or even more shocking something from a community fund raiser. *shrugs*

Please spare me the 'yeah lets send a cop to every yard sale' crap. lol I realize that is not a doable answer to the problem. My questions are along the line of this "do you feel the perpetrators should be called out and at least embarrassed? " Do you consider it 'theft' no different than any other or a lesser crime? Any thoughts on where that thin line is?

I'm headed out for a quick Google fix on it, maybe something on the subject. :dunno: I'll try.

calling out somebody redhanded shoplifting has got to make them look like such a loser. I wouldn't let anybody get away with stealing anything. I'd first, call him/her out in front of everybody and tell them to put the **** back.

If that doesn't faze them then I'd take the law into my own hands.. ;) just enough not to let the fuck sue.

If all else fails i wouldn't get the police involved. It depends on what it is that's been stolen.

I had unknown people sneak into a wedding reception. No one knew who they were. They ate and snuck back out.

Well my thoughts on this is.............

I think it is just like if you walk in to a store and stole something I think it would be a crime and if someone walk in your yard and stole something to me its a crime but I don't think I would be all upset if it were worth a dime or a small mount of money.

But stealing is stealing no matter were just my :2 cents:

I'd be more bothered by what I didn't see someone take. What you saw might be 10 cents, but who knows what else?

I think it's worse to steal from a yard sale or a charity sale or something than it is to steal from say, Wal-Mart.

Heres a little story and some advice on how to handle it. I agree that its not worth getting hurt over.

I think I would try to get tag # and just report it. Or ask "Is there a phone camera in da' house" lol get them to snap a pic as the person is lifting it, then get tag. Only of course if it were of value though.
Amazingly people also "hold up" yard sales. That's why its recommended not to be alone and to 'drop' larger amounts of money in a safer place, not keeping big amounts in your coffee can. Only change.

Not sure if the same law would apply would apply to shoplifting at Walmart if they stole your stuff at yard sale but it would be stealing and unlawful for sure. But you know if the thief had any brains he would be coming through the back of your house while you were busy out front with the yard sale lol.

I do too ! It's more personal.

To rip off an individual ?

or

To rip off millions of individual investors ?

Makes perfect sense to me !

Some of those "non english speaking types" are notorious for ransacking yard sales. They're very skillful as they arrive in more than one vehicle, they bring their ******** . . . hell, you can have a dozen or more of "reconquistas" bewildering your sale.

My sheriff pal once told me that they observe the attendants as much if not more than the selection of goods for sale, as they cruise the residences. It's those "two women sales" that get the most reported hits, I remember him telling me.

Just get three, or better, four, decent sized gents to stand 'round and give and imposing look, if necessary.

I just cannot believe the audacity of some people !!
It infuriates me, as well, when some get a "free pass" 'cause of their culture !!

:hammer:

I never really thought of people stealing from a yard sale. I guess I am just too trusting of people, since it seems to be a problem. I agree with some of the others that stealing from a yard sale is just as bad if not worse than stealing from a store. Legally, I would guess it is the same thing as shoplifting.

I see it as even worse than trying to steal from some large business. Assuming they aren't homeless or something like that, the people that would steal cheap stuff from a yard sale must be pretty pathetic.

Isn't the reason that we have Yard/Garage sales is to get rid of all the junk that is collecting dust in our attics or basement, and usually we price everything extremely low so that people will buy it.

So if someone steels something that you have put out at your yearly yard sale the last four years, a good thing? Otherwise it would just get put back in storage until the next year.

If someone wants to steel my junk, so be it, I don't want it, otherwise I would have not put it out at my yard sale each and every year
