Is Football Too Dangerous?

After watching last night's Pittsburgh match, I have to ask: has a player ever died as the result of a tackle? Is the game, with all it's helmets and pads to protect the tackler, now too rough to be called a ball game?

As strange as it sounds, boxing was safer during the bare knuckle days, as fighters would not punch the face for fear of breaking their own hand. I feel football is going the same way, the defensive players feel invincible and attempt very hard hits, in yesterday's case a high-speed helmet to helmet amongst others, aren't they going too far now? Shouldn't the league do something about it? :( :wave2:

As far as I know only one person has died playing a top level major professional sport outside of boxing (or auto racing if you consider that a sport) in the US the last hundred years and that was in baseball. I could be wrong and somebody might correct me on that, but that's all I know about.

As far as it being too dangerous the players get paid large sums of money and they all should know the risk by that point. The risk of getting hurt in a sport is ever present, but there comes a point where you just have to except that as a part of the game that they like doing. The risk can't be taken out of life, nor should people be paralyzed because of it. Otherwise we all would be afraid to drive down the street for fear of what might happen to us.

I have to agree on the fact that they get paid a lot of money and while yes there might be a risk it is very small and they are getting paid large sums of money to deal with that risk and then some

It was a legal hit, but I think the NFL needs a lot of changes.

Anybody else feel that games today are too quick? I mean you turn on a game and then the next thing you know its half time.

Big hits are apart of the game and the players are fully aware of what the risks are.

3 1/2 hour games are not long enough for you?

Players are getting bigger, stronger and faster. Sad to say but Im sure I will see someone get killed on the football field. But everybody loves them whooo-hits.

I'm not sure anyone will ever get killed..but if there is a run of spinal cord injuries/paralyzations...we could see some changes.

That was a brutal, but legal hit. It just happened to be timed too well....

Conspiracy...
What about rugby? They do not wear helmets and padded uniforms.

American football players are whiners.

I say no more helmets, play like the rugby players do.

As a former college player, I believe football is safe. Yes there are injuries but for the most part they are minor and heal in weeks. You know the risks involved when ou strap on the helmet. I think the NFL has done a great job with the recent rule changes to improve safety. If they keep going farther might as well just call it flag football.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
No sport is really "safe", if you think about it. But, for the amount of contact and potential for serious injury, I think that football keeps it's players pretty safe, for the most part. Obviously, there are a few examples of players getting really hurt, but they are few and far in between.

Lots of sports are dangerous, part of the sport is avoiding the dangers when you take part. Several UK Rugby players have been paralysed the most recent committed suicide after he decided he couldn't face life in a wheelchair, but in relation to the amount of games that take place its extremely rare. I definately agree with Will, british rugby is far more dangerous, no pads, no helmets! And there's no way anyone would even consider trying to get them introduced. So, in relation to Rugby I'd say American Football is safe!

Chef, and this is extremely rare, but I have to disagree with you here.

Of all the major sports played here in the U.S., football is by far the most dangerous.

Hockey is close, but because major fighting is allowed, I disregard it. (referring to Bertuzzi sucker punch, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz9RE9RGrVY (WE WILL NEVER FORGET...........) the stupid FUCK went too far, but you get my point)

Football is fucking brutal. Seriously. You and I, and everyone reading this right now would not get up and walk away if subjected to a single hit dished out on any given Sunday.

Some never do.

I'll give you the fact that the entire point is to stop the ball. But fuck, some people have never gotten up and walked again just to move the ball forward a couple of yards.

Too brutal?

Yes.

Now that I totally agree with. The NFL has become somewhat pussified. It should be the way it was 30 years ago. Even harder hitting, in your face football. You rarely heard back then players getting fined for laying a clean, legal hit on someone. Now, all you hear is people getting fined for just giving a player a slap on the back. I mean what the fuck is that shit? If this kind of pussification was around in the 60's and 70's, men like Jack Lambert, Dick Butkus or Ray Nitschke would be broke after every game. Football is a hard hitting, aggressive game. The people back then were aggressive and it showed in the type of playing that occurred. Now all the soft people are making the game soft and taking away the true nature of it. I for one hope that the game becomes more harder and more aggressive.
