Tue Mar 15 2011 11:54:56
Iran has denounced the arrival of Saudi troops in Bahrain as unacceptable, and the United Nations has urged its nationals to leave the island.
More than 1,000 Saudi troops entered Bahrain on Monday to help the government cope with the Shia uprising against the Sunni elite.
Iran, which sits across the Gulf from Bahrain, has sharply criticised the Saudi intervention, which has involved clashes breaking out overnight with the key highway still blocked.
The US has also urged Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter and a key ally in the Gulf Arab region, to show restraint.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates has said that it would send 500 police at the request of Bahrain's rulers after weeks of protest against the government and royal ******.
