People deprived of the internet feel 'upset and lonely' and find going offline as hard as quitting smoking or drinking

The majority of people feel upset and lonely when they are deprived of access to the internet, according to consumer research.

A new study has revealed that 53 per cent feel upset when denied access and 40 per cent feel lonely if they are unable to go online.

The research found that people experience these feelings even if denied online access for a short time.

The study was carried out by consumer research firm Intersperience, who surveyed over 1,000 people.

Participants were quizzed on their attitudes to the use of the internet, smart phones, and other devices, and were even asked to go 24 hours without any access to internet technology.
Giving up all technology allowing web access was described by some participants as similar to quitting drinking or smoking.

One person surveyed even said being deprived of the internet was 'like having my hand chopped off'.

If something was on television to watch other than "reality" television it would be better.

Also, Netflix taking away local video renting stores, then raising their prices, and ereaders destroying bookstores.

Looks like we need the Internet.

This is why I have books, magazine, comic books, a radio and so on.

Remember radios?

For the EMPEROR!!
I definitely believe it. I see people everyday with their faces glued to iphones and blackberries walking around in their own little worlds. I'm a little guilty of doing it myself at times.

I agree about the 'Reality Shows'. I'm so sick of them all. It's like a bad joke that won't go away.

That article reminded me of that South Park episode "Over Logging". :D

yeah, but once you 'unplug', you return to normal.

Yes, it is addicting to receive instant stimulation, but if you go without it for a week, you can continue on without it (and actually enjoy it).

The problem with the Internet is that it can be a source for so much (entertainment, news, porn, etc) that it is a one-stop-shop for everything.

The compulsion retrains your brain to expect things quicker and true "READING" takes a back seat most of the time because there really isn't a need (on the Internet) for this type of skill

I have been offline one and a half ear ago for five months...

I had trouble for a week or two, then it was quite relaxing.

what the fuck you lookin at?
I'd be lost without my internet porn. Matter of fact, I'd be in prison for murder. It's truly the only thing that keeps me civilized!

Good article/thread, Will.

Years ago, I decided to make a life changing career and lifestyle move. I wanted to "get off the grid" as much as I could. But even though I now live far removed from my past, I'm more wired now than I ever was before. I rely on online banking and brokerage services, most of my news comes off the internet and I only subscribe to one magazine now... where I used to subscribe to a dozen or more. And with what I do as a primary income source, I very seldom meet any of the people who I do business with or "work with". Most of the engineers that I've dealt with over the years, I've never met and we have no idea what the other even looks like.

And whether it's a good or bad thing, my current relationship (such as it is) is maintained by the fact that we can use Facetime video chats and email over those periods when I'm traveling on business and we can't see each other.

It does make you think though. While I've read that the internet has made some people more social, I wonder what the definition of "social" really is. I don't know the people who own the property to the right of me... and to be honest, I'm not really trying to get to know them. They're absentee owners from out of state and as long as they don't bother me, I won't bother them. Whereas years ago, we'd have probably felt obligated to get to know each other.

Hmm, think about it: using the internet, you can get a date, buy groceries, order food, generate an income, pay bills, get your news, watch TV or movies, make "friends", become an amateur politician, etc., etc. Hell, why even go outside? There be dragons out there!!!
