not soon enough. ive lent out so much shit to assholes, and ill never see it again. it doesnt matter how well you know them, nobody is above never talking to you again.
if i stacked up just the trade paperbacks ive lent out that i no longer have, it would easily go past my knee/mid thigh

thats why i dont do it. we have like 3 movies we borrowed and havent gave back. you just forget. and then there comes a time where you dont want to give it back because you look like a dick. oh, heres your movies back from last year.

I only lend things out to people I know take care of things. Usually after a week or two depending on what it is do I ask. If it is a video game I ask a week or so later how they like it; a movie I ask before or after a weekend which; if a book I give it a few days before asking if they had a chance to start it yet.
There are ways to go about asking about your stuff without sounding like the person who is borrowing it is using it as a throwing knife target, firestarter, or coaster for their icy stein.
Your best bet is to think who else likes Dexter and who would you trust enough to borrow it. If not ask around. Be cool about it.

I recently lent a book to a friend. Three weeks later he hadn't started it and someone else wanted to read it so I asked for it back.

I don't lend out books, that's crazy talk.
DVDs I give out one at a time. I expect them back in a week, or I'll ask about them. I have serious issues with my possessions though. I don't like to give them out. As a kid, I kept my DVDs in a locked bag so that my brothers couldn't borrow them.

It's probably best to arrange a span before handing it over. Then when the time comes you go collect or ask them to bring it back next time they come round to your place or whatever. Other than that I'd say a week or two depending on what it was you gave them. A movie or a season of a show or a book. I am careful as to who I give things too these days. Most people don't look after other folks DVDs they tend to treat them like their own. Finger prints, light markings on the discs probably brought on by sitting the disc down on or in something other than inside the case for the disc it's self. I lent season one of The Vampire Diaries out to someone once. I got seasons 1 2 and 3 of Supernatural from them as I'd never seen the show before at the time. I had all three seasons watched in three days (one season per day). I handed them back in the same condition they were given to me in. A couple of discs with finger prints and markings but they played fine. Then I got TVD back and it was in the same condition as their discs. And this was me handing it to them as if it was still in the selofane wrapping as I had only watched it once. And I take care of my things. So being me I went out and bought another copy of season one of TVD as it was only £12.99 new at the time so that's ok compared to £30+ new when it comes out at first. So I now have two copies of season one, the ever so slightly marked copy and the well looked after copy I bought again. It would annoy me to have that first copy of season one in my collection knowing there are markings on a couple of discs. I don't like that sort of thing. So I had to buy a second copy.
If it's more than a month or two I politely enquire whether or not said person has read/watched the item in question. If they haven't my enquiring should bring their duty as the person borrowing something to their attention which hopefully speeds up the process. If they have, I'll pick the item up the next time I see them. I used to be a lot more protective of my stuff, never allowing anyone to borrow anything. I don't know what changed, but right now it really doesn't bother me all that much if a friend is somewhat leisurely with whatever they've borrowed.
What? even your VHS or DVD stuff starring Jeff Stryker zombie killing porn star. I'd be mighty pissed off if some cunt didnt return my Zombie Flesh Eaters 3 (aka Zombie 4: After Death). It's the only Jeff Stryker flick I own.... so far anyway. So it better be returned if given out on loan or the body count will rise.
