I'm self employed so although I'm never technically out of a job sales have gone down and our costs have gone up meaning I'm having to work much harder for less money, it seemed depressing working in the family business up until a couple of years ago but now I'm just glad I've still got a regular income compared to all those who have been laid off.

My brother who has been working in IT for 15 years and has every advanced qualification under the sun has just landed a job (albeit contracting) after struggling for over a year either not working or doing a few months for low pay that didn't even cover his mortgage. He ended up trying a boot market which was quite pityful to see, he knows everything about computers but is no saleman I tell you. People can get quite desperate as one minute you have a regular income and are spending based on that then that income suddenly stops and you can't cover the mortgage/rent or buy the things you want to. The ones most affected are those with a mortgage who face losing their homes if they can't meet the payments, even selling the home isn't an option as they might be in negative equity (house worth less than what they paid) and the price they get if they sell may still leave them owing the lender money. Sad all around

Some companies (eg wal-mart) lay off their employers before they do X number of years in service because after those number of years they get all kinds of bonusses such as a pay raise and various other bonusses.
This may have been why you were laid off and then recalled; to keep you working for time X without rewarding you for time X.

I too have known unemployment in the past but I found something because I didn't give up and believed in myself and knew that there were be something better at the end.
