Rene Descarte had some interesting points of view, particularly his ridiculous thoughts, essentially, that whatever COULD be doubted MUST be rejected. In other words, if it was not 100% certain in HIS mind, it could not be trusted and was not valid. Talk about egotism. lol

Descartes was provocative as a philosopher, but I find his theories a bit naive or short-sighted - his skepticism was his fatal flaw, in my eyes. I think he was far more beneficial to humanity as a mathematician. :2 cents: :hatsoff:

If you find this thread so lame and out of place on this type of Forum, why would you take the time to read it, let alone post a comment deriding the individual (whom is banned, by the way) for posting what is a legitimate topic for discussion? I mean, after all, we may indeed be members of a bulletin board designed primarily for the viewing and discussion of porn, but all in all, just look at the number of topics and discussions delaing with a variety of subjects.

Given he's been here nearly a year and posted like 50 times total (I'd never heard of him or seen him post here in this area of the board), I think it's safe to say JBarx is not a big purveyor of dialogue or a wordsmith. lol
I understand though that there are many people here who could not care LESS about abstracts of thought and certain other levels of discourse - they just want to see tits and ass. That's fine. Now that you have read Descarte, you can go on: Kant, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger (ok, you can skip this one), Sartre, Merleau Ponty...

Could one doubt his own existence? Well in order to doubt one's existence, you would have to doubt that you were doubting your existence (because you wouldn't exist). On top of that, you'd have to doubt that you doubt that you were doubting...etc. You would have to doubt the truth of an infinite number of propositions and that is not possible (and in the end, you'd have to beleive that "you" were doubting them).
Also, the statement "I think, therefore I am" is tautologically true. In order for me to think, I must exist in the first place. One may bring up a fictional character such as Neo from The Matrix. Certainly, in the movie, Neo thinks about whether to save Trinity or the rest of the world. However, it is not the case that Neo exists, he's a fictional character. My response would be that in the same sense that Neo is "thinking" (in a fictional sense), then it is the case that he also "exists" (in a fictional sense).
So yeah Descartes was right on this one. I've never really looked at the argument that he got to for God from this premise so I can't tell you if that argument is sound or not (but now I'm curious).
