actually on another board we had a good discussion about this and here's what I said then:
as to my POV... well, I guess that maybe the appeal could be that that anatomical region is one that is shared by both male and females, and even if they don't both wish to explore it on each other, they at least have an idea of what it feels like and that could be a source of greater intamacy than the organs that they have in opposite and so don't really have an understanding of. ::shrugs::
that is of course based on male/female partners. It seems pretty obvious of it's use among male/male, and I guess that explanation doesn't fit for female/female. I don't really know to what degree they might practice anal sex above other forms, I've never asked.
